Members are reminded that under the new Articles of Association we will hold elections in conjunction with the Fall/Winter muster. Any member may nominate any member, including themselves, for any of our three officer positions, with all nominations due prior to 10 days before the Muster. So start thinking about who you wish to have serve for the Class of 2017.
The Society of Descendants of Militia Officers
The Society of Descendants of Militia Officers is a lineage society for descendants of officers of state or colonial militias prior to the Civil War.
Very productive Spring Muster: Articles of Association adopted, changes made in publication schedule of our newsletter, plans for our militia researcher credential discussed, reports reported, and successful use of the 5 minute formatted presentations for member education. The toll free conference call worked well. And we had both members and applicants participating.
Draft articles of association are out for review and comment by the membership. Feedback as soon as possible please.
Updated Registers of Commissioned Officers (149 pages) and of Militia Units (100 pages) are posted on the website. We are about two thirds of the way through the organizations and commanders of the Massachusetts Militia in the 1600s.
We have one short presentation in for the Spring/Summer Muster "Graves and Catchment Areas" on a technique for identifying the enrolment areas for Militia companies based on cemetery records. We will also have a short presentation on completing officer profiles for our website (see http://militiadescendants.org/profile-wood-a- for an example). We still have room for at least one more.
Profile - Wood A. Born: approximately 1610 in England based on his age of 10 when he emigrated to Virginia in 1620. His parents are not known.
A special Memorial Day issue of our newsletter, The Assembly, is out. Let us know if your copy did not arrive.
We are slowly catching up on correspondence, and application processing. By the end of the weekend, all outstanding correspondence should be answered and outstanding applications in process. We apologize for the delay.
We are looking for short 5-10 minute presentations on research problems related to militia members and how you solved them for the Spring Muster.
The Society has added an Associate Member category. If you have a substantial interest in the Militia in the years 1607-1861, but do not descend lineally from a Militia commissioned or non-commissioned officer or collaterally from a brother of an officer, you may qualify for Associate Membership. See our membership page on the website at http://militiadescendants.org.
Home Our hereditary Society honors the contribution of the Militia and its commissioned and non-commissioned officers and members with the status of officers to national defense from the first colonies to the start of the Civil War. As descendants of officers of the colonial and state militias, we work…
We are through the first two sources we are using to add militia officers from Bacon's Rebellion to our list - one more to go.
The first of our short biographies of Militia officers (Major General Abraham Wood) is up on the Profiles page of our website at http://militiadescendants.org/profiles.
Just added - we now have a permanent section on the website to capture our Be On The Lookout service for members seeking information on members of the Militia.
