It has been almost 8 years since our son, James, had his 1st anaphylactic reaction, which we later learned was a severe allergy to treenuts. Since that reaction on May 14, 2015, we have diligently managed his allergy by maintaining a tree nut-free home, carefully selecting restaurants, and avoiding any foods that are not deemed 100% safe for James.
But apparently, it was inevitable that this day would come. We received a call from James’ school as he was complaining of hives and itching on his back. After a dose of Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream, we sent him to track practice.
Not even a 1/2 hour later, James was back in the clinic. The hives were spreading to his hands, arms and chest. I was really hoping this day would never come, but I told the nurse “Epi him, call 911” and off to the ER we go!
After two doses of Benadryl, epinephrine and a steroid, James is feeling much better. Now, we are left with the unknown as to whether James has a new food allergy or some food at school (which is nut free) was inadvertently cross-contaminated with tree nuts. We hope the later as we will have to wait at least 6 to 8 weeks to test him for a new food allergy. The waiting will be excruciating!
