Tutor Upgrade Tip: Once you reach high school and know that you want to go to college, start thinking about about any colleges that you may be interested in. Tenth grade is not too soon to start taking tours and visiting a couple of colleges. Eleventh grade is a great time to visit a few more of your top choices. By 12th grade, a number of schools allow early decision so it can be very beneficial to know by the end of your junior year where you'd like to go. Early decision often chooses about half of the freshman class and you have a better chance of getting into that college if you apply early decision. Picking the right college for you is very important to your success in life and this article does a great job of listing what you need to think about to make an informed choice for yourself. Do pay attention to number 6. Some top schools meet full need, some top schools use need based formulas which means you don't pay more in the end and often, pay less, and some top schools are actively seeking out bright students with great financial need to add dimension to their student body. If you have worked hard and have a strong record, don't cross any colleges off your list as not being affordable. Take the time to learn what financial aid is available. Often, you will be surprised by the outcome.

The important idea to take away from this article is that just because you may be struggling in math now does not mean that you will never be good at math. Math is cumulative which means you must understand each concept that comes before in order to build a strong understanding and mastery of math as a whole. Tutor Upgrade Tip: According to a study done in 2017, by this year 2.4 million STEM jobs will go unfilled. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Here are some more facts worth considering: STEM jobs are projected to grow by 13% in the next ten years. The average hourly pay is $38.85 for STEM jobs. The average yearly salary for STEM jobs is over $87,000. Interest in STEM peaks during middle school and then wanes in high school. My tip is don't assume that because your student or yourself stuggle in math or science, that you just aren't good at it and never will be. Science and math are very foundational and if you did not master 1 concept in 5th grade, that can have ever multiplying effects as you move forward throughout school. However, you can improve greatly if you have a good tutor who can help you identify the missing concepts and rebuild your understanding. Tutor Upgrade Tip: It is very important to understand what kind of learner you are to succeed in school, in college, and in life in general. Often, it is not an issue with the material in school being too difficult for you but instead with how the material is presented to you. Most people are visual learners so those learners may struggle in lecture classes. If you are an auditory learner, classes where you mainly learn by reading or doing may be difficult for you. If you are a body-kinesthetic learner, classes and subjects that pair movement with learning will be your strengths. Once you understand what kind of learner you are, you can choose to use strategies that can make any class material more understandable to you no matter how it is presented.
