Girard Trojan Hall of Fame inductee: Charles “Chuck” Pope

BY EMILEE HANKS
TROJAN TRIBUNE

With the goal of honoring students, teams, groups, faculty, alumni, contributors and legacy honorees for their dedication and achievements to the USD 248 district, the Girard Trojan Hall of Fame was created in the spring of 2025.
One of this year’s inductees, Charles “Chuck” Pope was born in southeast Kansas and graduated from Girard High School in 1989.
Throughout high school he was selected as a three-time All-CNC and two-time All-State and All-Area honoree.
After graduation he attended Coffeyville Community College where he received academic and athletic All-America honors and was named the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1992.
Pope helped lead Coffeyville to an undefeated 1990 NJCAA National Championship, an achievement later recognized with his 2025 induction into the CCC Hall of Fame.
He continued his career at Baylor University as a two-year starter at the center position and anchored one of the nation’s top offensive lines.
After earning his degree in Foreign Service, he returned to the sidelines as a defensive line coach and played a role in Blinn College’s historic back-to-back NJCAA national championships with Pitt State alumni and current University of Houston head coach Willie Fritz.
Beyond athletics, Pope devoted more than two decades to public service as a U.S. diplomat before retiring after a distinguished career as a Senate-confirmed, presidentially commissioned Foreign Service Officer.
Today he is Chairman of Pope Solutions, leading three successful global companies that partner to win and implement contracts and grants worldwide.
Pope credits his roots in Southeast Kansas, especially the Girard and Walnut communities, for shaping the discipline, drive and service ethos that have defined his life.
He remains deeply proud to be a Trojan and grateful for the opportunities and values instilled by USD 248.
