We’ve stuck 96,000 poinsettia cuttings in our greenhouses so far this summer, and they’re growing beautifully!

We’re excited to welcome Sara Hernandez to the Headstart Nursery team as our new Front Desk Coordinator!

We had a chance to sit down with Sara to get to know more about her. Check it out ⬇️

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
A: My career journey started in the medical field, where I became a Certified Medical Assistant after graduating from Central Coast College in 2023. I’m now taking a different path and continuing my education with a focus on food safety in agriculture, an industry I’ve always felt connected to.

Q: What are you looking forward to doing in this role?
A: I look forward to growing within the company. As a receptionist, I feel that I already have one foot in the door, and I am excited to continue putting forth my best effort and developing my skills so that I can grow within the company.

Q: Why is working in agriculture and at Headstart Nursery important to you?
A: Coming from a family with parents who have worked in agriculture their entire lives, I feel a strong connection to the industry. I hope to become someone who can advocate for those whose voices may not always be heard. At Headstart Nursery, I have seen firsthand how both clients and employees are treated with respect and valued equally. That is something I truly appreciate and one of the reasons I am motivated to continue contributing to the company.

Q: What do you like to do during your free time?
A: Outside of work, I enjoy taking my daughter to the park and spending quality time with my family. I also enjoy creating flower bouquets and continuously working to improve my designs, with the hope of one day starting my own flower bouquet business.

Today, three generations of the Costa family are part of the Headstart Nursery story. First came Steve and Randy Costa, who founded and launched the nursery. Their sons, Kevin, Thomas and Kyle, are currently leading production and seed procurement. And now, Kevin and Kyle are introducing the next generation—their baby boys—to the nursery and the important role agriculture plays in feeding the world.

Three generations. One family. One shared commitment to delivering the highest quality plants and growing the future.

We've now delivered pumpkin variety trials to 5 pumpkin growers, helping them evaluate the next generation of pumpkins for future harvests.

Our Product Development Expert, Ryan DeLashmutt, has been on the road from Modesto and Tulare to Hanford and Paso Robles, donating 7–10 pumpkin varieties to each grower (that’s 500+ plants at each farm!).

Many of these varieties are still experimental, featuring everything from classic orange jack-o'-lanterns and Cinderella pumpkins to unique stem colors and eye-catching broomstick-style handles.

We can't wait to see how these trials perform in the field and what they could bring to pumpkin patches in the years ahead!
