When there is heat added to a substance, the particles gain kinetic energy, this makes them move faster and spread farther apart. In the solid state, the particles are packed very close together and only vibrate when they are in place, this happens because strong intermolecular bonds hold them together very tightly. As there is heart transferred to the substance, these particles are gaining energy and starting to overcome some of the bonds, this causes a solid to melt to a liquid, where the particles are able to slide past each other but still be pretty close. If you add even more heat to the substance, these particles gain enough kinetic energy to break most intermolecular attractions and then become a gas, the particles are moving freely and spreading pretty far apart. When the heat is removed, the opposite happens, the particles lose kinetic energy, start moving slower, and intermolecular bonds begin to form again.
