Parents confused by the number line?

My 2nd grader is starting to use the number line. It can seem like a lot of work compared to how parents learned adding and subtracting larger numbers. The big idea is breaking apart the number you are adding or subtracting into jumps of 10s and 1s. This helps kids visualize the size of the numbers, place value, and helps build a solid foundation of concept understanding before moving onto stacking numbers like we do as adults.

HOW TO AVOID THE SUMMER SLIDE: READ!!!!!

Did you know children reading at least 15 minutes a day see substantial positive gains in reading achievement, yet over half of students don't do this?

A research study of more than 9.9 million children discovered this in 2015/2016 school year. Check out the article.

Multiple studies show the connection between time and frequency of reading practice, reading growth, and reading test scores—but students are reading less and less. Explore the importance of reading practice in the Education Leader’s Guide to Reading Growth, a series about strategies for improvi...

Family movie time! Check out Pixar's short film selection on HBO.

Watching these short films with no language can actually help children with their reading comprehension! Practicing with a media kids are already familiar with is an effective first step in students applying the skill to their reading!

Make sure to discuss what's going on in the movie as you watch with your children: What's happening? Why did______ do that? What do you think is going to happen next? Did you think there was a lesson in this movie?...

At Pixar, we LOVE shorts! In fact, our first ventures in storytelling through film were with short films and commercials. Beginning with Luxo Jr., shorts have allowed us to tell stories in different ways than our feature films, but often with just as much emotional impact.

Reciprocal Reading is an amazing Orton Gillingham strategy I've had great success with when helping my older students strengthen comprehension. One of my students moved up 2 GRADE LEVELS in reading after working with her weekly for 6 months!

Reciprocal Teaching is a powerful reading strategy that supercharges students’ comprehension and engagement with their reading.

Watch our 3-part interview with Lori Oczkus, author of “Reciprocal Teaching At Work," as she explains the interactive discussion technique. https://bit.ly/2GU0IO2

Great opportunity for k-3 readers!

We've added more spots to our popular Book Buddies program, taking place TONIGHT Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7pm. Kids will practice their reading with a teen volunteer--playing word games, reading aloud, and using other techniques that our teen volunteers have been trained on to help kids who need a little extra help with their reading. Open to grades K-3. Sign up here: bit.ly/BookBuddyFeb
