🎉 Mazama High School has been named a 2025 School of Excellence by ACT’s American College Application Campaign!
Mazama High School has earned the 2025 School of Excellence award by ACT’s American College Application Campaign (ACAC), a national initiative that supports first-generation and under-resourced students in pursuing higher education. Only one high school per state is recognized each year.
Mazama High School, like other schools in the district, provides the pre-ACT to all sophomores and the ACT to all seniors at no cost.
But the school’s approach goes beyond simply offering the tests. “We intentionally reach out to all students – including migrant and special education students -- to ensure they take advantage of these opportunities,” said Mazama Vice Principal Sergio Cisneros. “These are the first steps to achieving college and scholarship goals.”
Tests are administered during the school day, with teachers supporting students while they make up missed work. College Application Week allows students to complete applications in real time with guidance from counselors and teachers.
This school year, 64 Mazama students signed up to take the pre-ACT; and 39 students signed up to take the ACT. During Oregon Goes to College Application Week in November, 120 of the school’s 140 seniors participated.
Sydney Lockery, Mazama’s counselor for seniors and sophomores, says the award represents the dedication and support from the school’s counseling team, staff, leadership, students, and community.
“This recognition reflects the collective effort behind creating a school environment where students are supported, challenged, and inspired to take ownership of their futures – and we’re excited to keep that momentum going,” Lockery said.
Mazama Principal Jennifer Hawkins emphasized the school’s broader mission: “Our goal is to prepare students for life beyond high school—financial stability, career readiness, and continued education. We want them to live a good life, and we provide the guidance and support to make that possible.”
Cisneros also highlighted the importance of staff guidance for first-generation college students. “If students don’t have a parent or mentor to guide them through the process, it can be overwhelming. Our counselors and staff are structured, coordinated, and intentional in helping as many students as possible.”
ACAC praised Mazama High School for its innovation and commitment. “Many students find the college-going process stressful, overwhelming or confusing and don’t know how to ask for help. Because of high schools like Mazama, students receive the support they need to break down the steps for applying to college and are set on a path to success. ACAC is grateful to educators who innovate and find ways to support students as they navigate the complex application process.”
