Today marks the anniversary of the 1855 Battle of Eupatoria, in which the Ottomans, supported by the French and British Navy, defeated the Russians.
The Crimean War was watched closely by Americans, and offered lessons that would save lives in the coming Civil War.

Established in 1853 and opened the following year, Evergreen Cemetery was Gettysburg's first non-denominational cemetery. Located on a prominent hill overlooking the town, the site was chosen a decade later as the linchpin in a strong Northern defensive position during the Battle of Gettysburg.
