The PCG/26th PEMR

The PCG/26th PEMR Gettysburg College’s Reenacting Unit, we portray the 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia Regiment. The current Pennsylvania College Guard (PCG), or Co.

A, 26th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia Regiment (PEMR), honors the memory of the Pennsylvania College students who left their studies in June 1863 to enlist in Gov. Andrew Curtin's emergency forces. They traveled by train to Harrisburg, PA, and entered into their country's service for a short time. When they returned to their college town of Gettysburg to fight, they not only found that soldiering

was difficult, but that it was their sacred task to battle a veteran force of Confederate soldiers. After their fight with General Jubal Early's forces, the schoolboys' service largely ends. Some of them, after their time in Company A, reenlisted in other Union regiments. This is their story.
