THREE DAYS (part 2)
While not as climactic as those three days in July 1863, all the same, the past three days were of another historic milestone.

Around 400 of a proud archaeological community gathered for the 56th annual hosting of the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference (MAAC) held near Gettysburg National Military Park at the Wyndham Gettysburg Hotel Including special activities of the pre-conference, the event occurred 12-15 March 2026

To say Virginia was well represented would not be an understatement. Here is a photo essay sampling which captures some of those from the Commonwealth. Council of Virginia Archaeologists / Virginia Department of Historic Resources / MAAC

Like in nature photography, there's always one which got away. On day three of the conference, in the last presentation, in the last image of the last presentation, during discussion of an isolated mountaintop log house occupation in Appalachia Montgomery County, Virginia, attention was directed to a small turn of the 19th century family cemetery. Here was found a handmade commemorative grave marker for a deceased family member. This person had died at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Just think - here we were at a 2026 conference in Gettysburg referencing someone who had died here in July 1863. Such an amazing twist of history. I regret not snapping an image with that grave marker inscription.

MAAC is a self-sustaining non-profit organization which serves the professional archaeological community. It is advancing the field, with a particular focus on current and potential students of archaeology. MAAC offers a range of sponsorships, student committee activities, networking, presentation competitions, and other support for the next and future generations of Mid- Atlantic archaeology professionals. If you know of someone interested in the field, have them reach out to MAAC, and especially follow social media.

We’re still thinking about what an incredible evening it was celebrating our colleagues, students, and friends from across the Middle Atlantic. The new research by students, the significant contributions of our FOUR Lifetime Achievement Award winners, and outstanding (and long-lasting) service by our President’s award winner are all a testament to the great work being done in our region. These awardees have helped shape MAAC and their contributions will continue to shape future generations of Middle Atlantic archaeologists! Congratulations to all on a job well done!
