Just wrapped up my last professional development of the summer with a Civil Rights course through Gilder Lehrman Institute for American History!

Dr. Jefferies walked us through effectively and accurately teaching the Civil Rights Movement and Master Teacher Corey invited us to explore our pedagogical practices

I’m so glad I got to see some familiar faces, explore the Gettysburg Battlefields and explore more Civil Rights history

Now to enjoy my last week before teachers return to work! 😩

I am so happy to finally announce that I’ve been selected as 1 of 13 educators across the nation to be a Prentiss Charney Fellow through the Zinn Education Project 🎉

Over the next year I will be collaborating with like minded educators to produce curriculum related to learning and teaching The Civil Rights Movement ✊🏽

This is truly an honor and a dream come true! I am looking forward to this journey of contributing to the field

At some point we have to be okay with moving away from how we’ve always taught a subject, or celebrated a holiday, etc.

And moving towards truth telling, centering people’s experiences and challenging historical narratives…..

If you are not following Zinn Education Project and using their lessons to teach truth, make sure you do so

As always- shout out to Kellie Carter-Jackson for authoring an amazing text that will be the anchor text for my AP African American Studies course as well as a continuing key component in my American Revolution unit for my US History students
