Looking back on student success:
Earlier this year, one of our former students got a new job opportunity!
Salvador had studied English in our ACLC program since 2024. After receiving his new job offer, he said,
“I just want to thank you for the opportunity; these classes helped me a lot. I would really like to continue studying [in my new city], as this opportunity to move to another state is a result of the great progress I've made with my English, which has allowed me to advance in my job.”
He explained that he is remaining with the same company but has been asked to manage another location. His educational background as an agricultural engineer in his home country, combined with his developing English skills, has prepared him well for this promotion. Congratulations, Salvador, for all your hard work!

Looking back on student success:
In July, Joom became a U.S. citizen and has continued to achieve amazing milestones. A student with us since July 2024, she independently completed a medical billing and coding course and passed her GED Science test.
We’re so proud of Joom’s determination and growth in literacy and workforce skills. We’d also like to thank her volunteer tutor, Penny, for her dedication and support!

Did you know?
59 million US adults have literacy skills at or below Level 1, the lowest level. They can understand very short, simple sentences, like determining from a job listing if the work is during the day or night or locating a phone number on a sign.
By improving the literacy rates of our communities, we empower adults to go out of their comfort zones and develop the skills needed to thrive.

Why does adult education matter?
Low literacy costs the US economy over $300 billion in lost earnings, lower workplace productivity, higher crime, and more government assistance. $46 billion in revenue is also lost due to employees’ low literacy skills. By improving the literacy rates of our communities, we also improve our economy.

Penny began her GED journey knowing she needed to strengthen her math skills. To support her goals, she was paired with Don, our dedicated math tutor, who faithfully served as our program’s sole math volunteer for many years. Through their time working together, Penny built both her skills and her confidence, eventually advancing to our GED 1 class at PA CareerLink. While Don has since retired from tutoring, Penny continues to work hard and stays committed to earning her GED. We’re very proud to know them both!

Happy Mother’s Day! Did you know that a mother’s reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic success, outweighing other factors such as neighborhood and family income? We appreciate the many mothers who work hard to develop their children’s literacy skills!
