Early voting starts Monday, October 19.

In 2023, after open heart surgery, I began putting the Navarro N in my last name for things school related. It's on a lot of my shirts and on my stadium seat. Not for a campaign. I did it so my kids would know this is home and as part of them as their own family heritage.

Navarro is growing and intentional growth isn't a bad thing. But growth decides what stays and what goes, and somebody has to be in the room when those decisions get made.

This Wednesday, October 14, 6:00 to 7:00 PM, the League of Women Voters of the Comal Area is hosting a candidate forum at the Geronimo Community Center, 280 Navarro Dr. Every candidate answers the same questions. Come hear us, then pick the people you trust.

If that includes me, I'd be honored.

What our school board actually controls

Most of our district's policy manual is state and federal law. A trustee can't rewrite it. What the board does control is how our district performs with the part that's ours:

💜 Hold the superintendent accountable for results
💛 Set a budget that puts money in classrooms
💜 Keep good teachers here
💛 Make sure parents get straight answers
💜 Protect what makes us Navarro, by giving traditions a seat at the table when decisions get made

I've lived in this district for almost two decades and I've been the President of a booster. I know what parents ask when they show up to a meeting, and it's never "how long is the policy manual?" They want results, straight answers, and a board that does its job. My commitment is to bring THAT mindset to the table if I am fortunate enough to be elected.

Early voting starts Oct. 19, Election Day is Nov. 3. I can't change state law and no candidate can nor should they promise to do so. What I can do is show up prepared, ask the hard questions in public, and help keep the board focused on what it actually controls. Hold me to it!

Today is National Coaches Day & I wanted to share a lesson I wrote 3 years ago about a rival coach:

Today is opening day for HS football in New Mexico. This is also the first opening day in almost 40 yrs that the man in this picture isn't involved with it in some capacity. He retired this summer.

This is Cooper Henderson.

Honestly, I can't remember a time that didn't know his name. He coached Ruidoso when Lovington went 13-0 with the 1986 team, & then in the late 80s he left to coach the Bulldogs. It seemed that every time we went to the State Championship, his face was looking at us from the other side.

So, why am I writing about him today? Because I don't know if I ever had a competitive "foe" I respected more than Coach Henderson. He and I never sat down and had a long conversation, but throughout high school he knew my first name and not just my last (In the 80s and 90s I think most of Chaves, Eddy, and Lea Counties knew that). No, Cooper Henderson would call me by my first name. For an opposing coach to do that, it was a big deal, especially from a coach with his football IQ. Heck, I always knew when we were playing Artesia, we had to beat Cooper Henderson, not his players.

My Junior year I made a good play right at the Artesia sidelines and when I got up Coach Henderson complimented my tackle. That was shocking and thrilling at the same time. After a gut-wrenching loss to Artesia my senior year, he went out of his way to find me and tell me that I was a heck of a ball player and the meanest of my brothers that he coached against. He didn't have to think of me at all because I wasn't one of his boys, but he did. He loved the game and you felt that.

What's the point of all this, right? Here it is...I had some amazing coaches who taught me life lessons that still influence me today (Rodie and Faith), and I love those men! But I also had a coach who taught me from afar that even if I wasn't his player, he still knew me and that it was about love for the game. So, for those who coach and are starting this season, remember that it isn't just your players who are watching you. Your rivals are watching and learning from you too! So, be a Cooper Henderson.

In a meeting last week I heard someone say people appreciate sound bites, not megabytes. Nobody has time to read a 40-page plan, so I'm keeping it short. Swipe through for where I stand: growth that's managed with integrity, a bond spent exactly as promised, every neighborhood heard, and a Navarro that doesn't just get bigger but stays Navarro. After 17 years and eleven kids in these schools...this is home!

Community. If you were around the District today, that is what you would have seen. Each one of the PTA/PTOs helped supply food and goodies to our teachers and staff. The N-ergizers were out greeting the High School students as they walked in (and I witnessed some great dancing by one of them)! And, in the evening, a lot of parents and fans gathered in the High School gym to support our Lady Panthers and watch our "Catbackers" cheer alongside our Varsity and JV cheerleaders (I had 4 out there tonight). Then, after the game, it was a barage of boys asking girls to homecoming while parents and friends smiled and watched. This is what Navarro is and what I believe in! Supporting and cheering each other on! I believe in strengthening our community, protecting our culture, and serving to build this district up for generations to come!

If I'm blessed enough to be elected to the Navarro ISD School Board, here's my promise: I will hold myself to the same standard of ownership this volunteer sets every week...no excuses, no half-measures, just doing the work to serve Navarro.

This last Friday I watched a volunteer at our stadium (no paycheck, grand-babies in tow, going back and forth serving others at our concession stand) put in as much work as our kids on the field....and she has done it for several years now! That's what real ownership looks like, and it's the bar I want to hold myself to at the board table if I am elected.

Thank you to her and many others who volunteer their time and energy into making this school district better in all different capacities.

Years before this campaign, I made the "N" in Gallini the Navarro "N". I put it on shirts, on my stadium seat, on things my kids see every day. I didn't do it to run for anything. I did it because I wanted my children to know, without question, that this is home and not a stop along the way, but the place they belong. That's the same conviction behind why I'm running for the Navarro ISD School Board: growth is coming fast, and I don't want my kids (or anyone's kids) to grow up in a district that got bigger but forgot what made it home in the first place. I'm asking for your vote so I can protect that on purpose, at the table where those decisions get made!

Friday night under the lights at the new stadium was electrifying! We had packed stands, that new mural on full display for our boys as they enter the locker room, and an atmosphere that's pure Navarro. Like I've been saying, a district can grow this fast and still feel exactly like home....if the people building it care enough to protect that on purpose. That's what tradition & culture means to me. Proud of our community and thank you to those who voted for this particular bond and making a gathering place like this happen!
