A month before this photo was taken, I was recovering from a triple bypass, open-heart surgery. Days after we got home from the hospital, without us ever asking, our Navarro community organized a meal train and fed our large family for weeks. People showed up to serve us who I didn't even know yet, some of whom became real friends, and a few I still haven't met in person to this day. We had people praying for us we'd never spoken to! That's our culture. That's our tradition.

This is why I love this community, and why I feel so connected to it. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote about exactly this almost 200 years ago, how Americans, more than any people he'd studied, constantly organize to serve one another without being asked, without government involvement, just because it needs doing. At our best, this is what's right about this country, and Navarro lives it!

At Monday's school board meeting, these statistics from Dr. Epley were humbling. As of this first week of school, Navarro ISD already has 3,375 students enrolled — that's 47 more than the district's own projected peak for the entire year. Last year told the same story: enrollment came in 142 students over projection by the final day of school. This isn't a one-time surprise. It's a pattern. Navarro added 328 students in a single year, and the district has already had to request reserve staffing positions just to keep pace.

This is exactly why disciplined, forward-looking planning matters at the board level. Not reacting to growth after it happens, but building the capacity to meet it before it arrives. Numbers like these are the real work behind every conversation about facilities, staffing, and the Attendance Boundary Committee this fall. If you wonder why the bonds voters passed exist, the proof is in these numbers. Good work has happened so far, and there's more on the horizon.

A few hours ago, Sheriff Ray informed the public his office is down 90 sworn deputies and over 24 detention officers from safe staffing levels, that the county's proposed budget adds zero new positions, and that as a result, full-time School Resource Officers at Marion and Navarro ISD are being cut, with only limited off-duty coverage remaining. If that's accurate, it's unacceptable. Our kids' safety at Navarro campuses shouldn't be what gets sacrificed in a county budget fight. I stand with Sheriff Ray on this: school safety should be funded, full stop, and I agree with him that he and the Commissioners Court needs to make it right before this budget is adopted on September 1st.

This is my 17th first day of school in Navarro ISD...with 9 more to go! By the time it’s all said and done, that’ll be more than a quarter-century of first days, memories, hopes, and expectations for the future right here at Navarro! To the parents dropping off their first child for Kindergarten today, and to the parents soaking in every moment of their child’s senior year (and all of us somewhere in between), I hope today is a good one!

Here’s to another year of growing, learning, making memories, and being proud to call ourselves Panthers. Have a great first day, Navarro!

Father, I come before You tonight as part of this Navarro family, grateful for another year You've brought us to. Thank You for this community, for the hands that built these classrooms, and for the purpose You've placed on every life walking through these doors tomorrow.

As school begins, cover our students in Your peace. Give them courage for what's new. New buildings, new classmates, new challenges. And remind them that who they are was settled long before any grade, any scoreboard, any opinion tried to tell them otherwise. Let them walk in confidence, knowing they are Yours.

Bless our teachers, coaches, and staff as they step into another year of pouring themselves out for our kids. Renew their strength on the hard days. Let them see, even when it's not said out loud, that their work echoes far past this school year and into lives they may never fully know they shaped.

Strengthen our parents and families. Give us patience on early mornings (especially in the car lines) and grace on hard evenings. Remind us that raising kids in a growing community is still, at its heart, the same sacred work it's always been, and that what we plant now, we may not see bloom for years.

And Lord, as this district grows faster than almost any other in Texas, don't let us lose what makes us Navarro. Unite us...old families and new ones, every campus, every corner of this community...as one people, marked by faith, love, and the courage to hold onto what matters most even as everything around us changes.

We stand together tonight as Panthers, and as people who believe You are already at work here. Lead us. Protect our kids. Move in this place.

Mark your calendars: Navarro ISD's public budget and tax rate meeting is Monday, August 31st at 6 PM, Navarro Intermediate School Cafeteria. This is where the district lays out the 2026-27 budget and proposed tax rate, and where the public gets to weigh in before anything's finalized. I'll be there. Faith is a big part of who I am, how I raise my family, and how I try to serve others, so there was something powerful about watching a prayer over our sophomore class a few days ago. I am incredibly thankful to live in a community where parents can ask for God's protection and guidance over their children, and where even those who may not share the same faith can understand and support the intention behind it. We don't all have to believe exactly the same things to stand together and want the same things for these kids and that they are protected, make good choices, find their purpose, and become the very best version of themselves. There is room for faith, room for different beliefs, and room for all of us at Navarro! And I am dang grateful for a community that understands that!

As this bond project nears completion, what we are seeing is more than a new stadium, new fields, or new facilities and it is a community’s investment in the future of Navarro. Our taxpayers entrusted the district with significant resources, and proper governance is always key to making sure that trust is honored through accountability, transparency, and responsible stewardship from the first vote to the final project. These facilities will serve thousands of Panthers for decades, giving our students places to compete, grow, gather, and represent the community they call home. Bonds build buildings, but good governance protects the investment...and investing wisely in our students today helps build the Navarro of tomorrow.

On the visitors’ side of our new stadium, every team that comes through those gates will look up and read one word: NAVARRO. But that name is bigger than seven letters on a stadium. It carries generations of Panthers who came before us, families whose names have filled our classrooms and our stands for decades, Friday nights under the lights, purple and gold, hard work, pride, tradition, and a community that takes care of its own. It tells our opponents exactly where they are and who they came to play. You are at Navarro. You are on our field. You are surrounded by our people. And that name means something here.

Today was one of those days that reminds you why you fall in love with a community in the first place! From 2:45 to 7, I got to be on our campuses in almost every way you can be before school officially starts. Working freshman orientation with the PTA, walking through schedule pickup at the Junior High's new location and catching up with teachers and families along the way, standing outside for the renaming ceremony as our old high school officially became Navarro Junior High, and then closing the night at the 7th and 8th grade football parents meeting. Different rooms, different purposes, same community showing up for its kids over and over again!

By the time it was all over, I found myself walking the halls with nobody else around. Just quiet, empty hallways that an hour earlier had been full of families, teachers, cheerleaders, and kids starting a new year. There's something about that silence that makes you grateful in a different way than the noise does. Growth is bringing us new buildings, new programs, new faces, but tonight reminded me it's still the same heart underneath all of it. Proud to call this place home!
