I think for many of us we first learn about “pain science” and the BPS model and our first reaction is something like “holy crap, how have I never heard or seen this before??? Is this a new thing???”

Well, we know folks have been advocating for this stuff for decades…but I figured who better to have a conversation with, than someone who has been pushing for a paradigm shift for 2 decades.

Greg has arguably been one of the most influential people in my career - so it was really quite an honor to have him on this podcast and have a candid conversation.

I have learned a ton from Greg, and while some of this is covered, we actually tackle a bigger topic as well.

Greg has been practicing now for almost 20 years!!! ⠀
In today’s episode we talk about trends in today’s practice…has anything really changed in his 20 years? Are we making progress?

We also talk a lot about what “current best practice” looks like and we share some gems that have been transformational nuggets that I have taken away from Greg’s courses over the years.

Please give it a listen and share it around! I think this is a conversation our profession needs to hear and discuss further! What are your thoughts?

Leveling Up Your Communication Skills pt 3: Phronesis and Hermeneutics

To me, the best communicators in healthcare are the ones who are masters of interpreting context. They interpret this context through both their own experiences, their informed well of knowledge, and of course, the experience of the person they are helping.

The best communicators know how to ask questions, when to ask questions, and what questions to ask.

They know how to help make sense of the story at hand, and provide sensible and motivating guidance that helps the process of moving forward.

This process is not something you can learn in a book, but rather something you can learn over time with intentional practice, exposure, and experience. This is where phronesis meets communication.

Hopefully this three part mini series opened your eyes to a bigger perspective on what it really means “to communicate effectively.”

E. 23 Can “Empowerment Model” PT be Both Sustainable and Profitable in Private Practice? With Founder and CEO of Rehab 2 Perform Josh Funk

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Josh Funk () good friend and owner of Rehab 2 Perform, a company with now 4 locations in the greater DC area. Josh is someone I have come to respect massively over the years, for one main reason: he is able to build an incredible company that is able to balance a true “empowerment model” with profitability and sustainability.

R2P is able to balance clinical reasoning with a STRONG background in strength training, pain science, biomechanics, and communication skills with an emphasis on building physical and mental resilience in their patients. R2P embodies what it means to be “a Level Up certified” practice.

We are living during a very exciting time in the healthcare industry (IMO) and Josh is at the forefront leading by example. Lots to be learned from what he has created, what he is creating, and what his plans are to continue to make an impact in healthcare. Hope you all enjoy!

[Active Ingredients in Rehab]

I can still vividly remember a critical moment early in my career. I was a hungry new grad that was craving certainty. I wanted to know exactly which “system” I should pursue.

My mentor () asked me this when I approached him about which systems were the best…

”Zak, every system “works” and to every single person, their system is “the best system”…How can this be so?”

I remember beginning to think critically about “the active ingredients” that were consistent through all the different approaches. How could they all be the best, and all work?

This is a big theme touched upon in course, which I was lucky to attend twice, and these are my takeaways as what I think to be “the active ingredients” in rehab.

Hopefully this is some good critical thinking fuel for you! Tag someone who would benefit from this thinking game.

Curious to hear some thoughts on things you might include in your active ingredients list!

[Must Listen]

Buckle in, ya’ll. We had an epic conversation! I really appreciated this open and candid conversation with someone who I admire greatly, Dr. Robert Streb. (Shout our to the Stony Brook Squad!!!!)

He has over 30 years of experience under his belt and lots of wisdom to share! What I admire the most about Dr. Streb is his practically skeptical and transparent approach he takes to his own learning and his student's learning!

I won't spill to much and keep it short. In this episode we cover hot topics surrounding manual therapy, pain science, and everything in between. If you are a practicing clinician (especially new grad) this is a must listen!!!! Please share with someone who you think would benefit from hearing this episode. As always, thanks for listening and if you find value in this show please leave us a review on iTunes!

Special shout out to the rockstar podcast team: , , and !!

A Lesson In Epistemic Responsibility (Takeaways from the Barbell Medicine Rehab Crew):

This is a topic that might ruffle some feathers, but we stand behind it whole heartedly as a foundation of our community, and more importantly, a value that we think needs to be instilled into healthcare at large if we truly want to move forward. Here is a snapshot of key takeaways:

WHAT DOES EMBRACING EPISTEMIC RESPONSIBILITY IN HEALTHCARE LOOK LIKE?:

✅First learning how to think about thinking and true appraisal of “evidence”

✅Is what we are doing medically necessary to positively influence prognosis?

✅Execute justifiable knowledge based practice (can you justify why you are doing what you are doing?)

✅Intentionally and voluntarily disconfirming your beliefs (attacking your beliefs)

✅Read voraciously beyond just Physical Therapy (expand your world view)

✅Play the long game, don’t chase flashy acronyms (Trust worthiness)

✅Embrace “being wrong” and demonstrate humility

✅Create a strong learning network of people who will challenge your beliefs

TAKEAWAY:

As providers, we believe it is our responsibility to strive to be virtuous in our delivery of healthcare, providing the best possible (most justified) knowledge informed practice.

If you think is is important, please share this post and get the word out!

⚠️*DISCLAIMER*⚠️
we are NOT perfect, and it is a continual journey, but this is a standard we should all strive to be meeting. Here are some fantastic networks to keep you in check!
