The Sheriff’s Reentry Program is proud to continue supporting William in his return from incarceration.

William spent 14 months in the reentry program, earning a welding certificate, passing the first half of his GED, completing The Fatherhood Initiative, participating in our Leadership Academy, and even leading a book study on post-incarceration.

William was granted parole and accepted into a residential recovery center where he’s already started working, making positive friends, and continuing his journey of personal and relational restoration. He’ll soon be resuming his GED studies, and we’re looking forward to sharing in his continued progress.

A huge thanks to Club 142 United for supplying every single item on William’s registry, all in less than one week!

Another GED exam complete!

After the test: “uh, I don’t know about that. I think I might’ve done okay, but I’m not sure. That one was tough.”

Yeah, he finished with more than enough correct answers and 10 minutes to spare. And he found out he kind of likes science after all.

Amazing Journey, Club 142, the people who donate … It’s a blessing. I can’t imagine doing this without their support. It makes all the difference.

“I don’t say I’m giving back to my community. I’m giving them the real me that they should’ve had all along. I was putting on for other people instead of being who I was. The people I was trying to fit in with, they never showed up when I was in prison.”

Recently, the Sheriff’s Reentry Program connected with Waymon Daniels as part of our Voices of Progress series. The hardest part of his time in prison: “those visits with my kids were more humiliating than the incarceration itself. That’s where I realized I had to change my life.”

“I didn’t realize the damage I was doing to my children, my mother, my whole family. I was looking at myself as the victim. I didn’t understand my family was the victim. I had to get home, hug them, say ‘I’m sorry,’ and work to be the person I know I am and want to be.”

Now, Waymon is active in his community and uses his organization Open Mic Communications to help returning citizens learn to live and share their stories of recovery and change.

“Change is hiring and they got great benefits. But are you willing to be hired by change?
Change now. Don’t wait til you get back home. Let yourself be loved so you can love others.”

We’re encouraged by Waymon’s work and grateful that he would share his Amazing Journey with us.

It’s been a challenging year for our GED students in the Sheriff’s Reentry Program, but they have persisted, adjusting to 4 days of class per week and regular homework assignments. Their dedication is starting to pay off, with this guy passing his first exam.

He even scored higher on the exam than on the Ready test a couple days before! He couldn’t stop staring at his score on the computer screen.

Big thanks to Horry County Schools Adult Education Program for getting us set to test on short notice.
