SUMMER ADVENTURES CONTINUE! Dr. Abraham Prades is in Spain with students, Brandon Gitschier, Isabella Billings, and Becky Bloemer. They are exploring the historic city of Segovia, living with local host families, and deepening their understanding of the Spanish language and of local history and culture. The program is coordinated by the Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS).

Segovia offers a weekly open-air market, picturesque plazas, cafes, and frequent musical and artistic events, making it an ideal backdrop for cultural immersion. In Segovia, students are exploring stunning landmarks, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site Roman aqueduct, the AlcΓ‘zar, and the Gothic Cathedral.

They are spending 3.5 weeks in Bregenz, Austria, and several days in Vienna. Students attend classes, join group excursions, and can travel on weekends.

Students chose among communication and media studies, psychology, business, and history to study during the trip. Dr. Dummer’s course in communication and media studies focuses on the influence of culture on developing relations.

Our commencement speaker, De Kai, is the author of the award-winning book Raising Al and a pioneering AI professor who built the web’s first global AI translator by inventing radical new language models, laying the groundwork for tools like Google Translate and Bing Translator. De Kai was honored by the Association for Computational Linguistics as a Founding Fellow for his decades of breakthroughs, which lie at the intersection of language, AI, cognition, and ethics. He is the Independent Director of AI ethics think tank The Future Society.

De Kai’s father, the late Dr. Chia-Wei Woo, was a theoretical physicist and university president. He was a 1956 Georgetown College Graduate who fiercely championed the liberal arts ideals that have rippled through to De Kai’s own work.
