James C. Kennedy Waterfowl & Wetlands Conservation Center Lead in Education and Science Toward Conservation of South Atlantic and Other Wetland Ecosystems

Headquartered at the Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science (BICEFS) — located on Hobcaw Barony, a 16,000-acre tract of undeveloped land along the Waccamaw Neck — the Kennedy Center is the first endowed waterfowl and wetlands conservation center along the 3,000-mile Atlantic Flyway stretching from the Canadian maritimes to the Gulf of Mexico. The Kennedy Center is part of Clemson’s

research efforts along South Carolina’s coast, where scientists at the Baruch Institute have studied the coastal environment for more than a half-century, including the environmental impact of changing land-use patterns, coastal natural resource conservation, forestry, water quality and watershed management. BICEFS is one of six Research and Education Centers (RECs) strategically located throughout the state according to the state’s distinct soil and climate regions. Collectively known as the Clemson Experiment Station, the RECs are part of the broader mission of Clemson’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences (CAFLS) to improve the quality of life for people in their home state, nation and the world.

New research from Clemson’s James C. Kennedy Center and collaborators tracking mallards and green-winged teal across the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Central flyways found that recruitment, how many young ducks enter the fall population, was the biggest driver of population growth from 2000 to 2020.

For mallards, wetter conditions in southern wintering areas and more May ponds on the breeding grounds were linked to higher productivity. Winter weather did not show a clear effect on survival, and the pond relationship was weaker for green-winged teal.

The takeaway: fall flights are shaped by conditions throughout the annual cycle, not just by what happens during hunting season.

Recently, our Ph.D. student Aksh*t Suthar attended and presented his research at the American Ornithological Society’s Annual Meeting at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

His talk explored how hydrological and habitat conditions influence the use of historical rice field impoundments by waterfowl and other waterbirds along the South Carolina coast. His poster highlighted a low-cost floating platform for deploying acoustic recorders in difficult-to-access wetlands, helping expand wetland monitoring and reduce accessibility bias.

Aksh*t also participated in workshops on eBird data analysis using AuK in R and bird movement modeling using BirdFlowR. As Co-Chair of the AOS Student Affairs Committee, he served on the Meeting Coordination Committee and helped organize conference activities, including the Quiz Bowl, Student Mentor Meet-Up, Conference 101, and Silent Auction.

Recently, Aksh*t Suthar, Ph.D. student at our center, was invited to serve as a panelist at the South Carolina Interagency Drone Users Consortium (SCiDUC) Symposium in Columbia, South Carolina.

During the panel discussion, Aksh*t shared how our Center is using drone technology for Waterfowl, wildlife and wetland research, including applications for monitoring wildlife populations, assessing habitats, and collecting ecological data. He also discussed emerging opportunities for drones to play an increasingly important role in natural resource research, conservation, and management.

The multi-agency symposium brought together professionals from organizations across South Carolina, including the SC Department of Environmental Services, SC Forestry Commission, SC Department of Natural Resources, SC Department of Public Safety, Charleston Police Department, Greenville Water, county offices, nonprofit organizations, and other partners.

New Publication

Aksh*t Suthar, Ph.D. student at the James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center, and Dr. Jim Anderson, Director of the Kennedy Center and Baruch Institute, along with their collaborators, have published a new research paper in the Wildlife Society Bulletin titled “Developing a Low-Cost Drone-Based Method for Deploying and Retrieving Autonomous Recording Units in Inaccessible Areas.”

This study presents an innovative drone-assisted approach for deploying and retrieving floating Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) in wetland interiors that can be difficult, time-consuming, or unsafe to access by foot or boat. By extending passive acoustic monitoring beyond easily accessible habitat edges, this approach can improve spatial coverage and help researchers better monitor secretive marsh birds, including rails and bitterns, and other wildlife that rely on complex wetland habitats.

Beyond acoustic monitoring, this work also highlights the broader potential of drones as tools for deploying and recovering multisensor environmental monitoring platforms in challenging landscapes. With continued advances in drone technology, similar platforms could incorporate eDNA samplers, water- and air-quality sensors, insect traps, plant-sample collectors, trail cameras, and other technologies—creating new opportunities for integrated biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring in wetlands and other inaccessible environments.

Yesterday, my community faced a tragic situation involving an alligator in a retention pond and the loss of a beloved family pet. This situation is heartbreaking.

As a wildlife biologist, I frequently see questions and concerns about alligators in neighborhood ponds. While it is natural to be cautious around a large predator, understanding their behavior is one of the best ways to keep both people and wildlife safe.

The first thing to understand is that if you live in coastal South Carolina, you live in alligator habitat. Our coastal landscape of ponds, wetlands, canals, and retention basins provides ideal habitat for American alligators. The presence of an alligator in a neighborhood pond is not unusual. In fact, it is expected.

One of the most common misconceptions is that removing an alligator will permanently solve the problem. In reality, alligators are territorial. Adult males establish and defend territories, while younger animals disperse in search of available habitat. When a resident alligator is removed, that vacant territory rarely stays empty for long. Another alligator will typically move in, often a younger individual attempting to establish its own territory.

For this reason, a large alligator that has lived peacefully in a pond for years without displaying aggressive behavior is often preferable to repeated removal and replacement. An established resident is familiar with its territory and may discourage other alligators from moving into the area. Removing that individual simply creates an opening for another alligator to occupy the habitat. It is important to note that any alligator exhibiting aggressive or nuisance behavior should be reported to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, but the mere presence of a large alligator is not, by itself, a reason for removal.

The greatest predictor of future human-alligator conflict is not the size of the alligator. It is whether that animal has become conditioned to associate people with food.

Feeding alligators, whether intentionally or by allowing food scraps to accumulate near the shoreline, fundamentally changes their behavior. Wild alligators naturally avoid people. However, when they repeatedly receive food from humans, they begin associating human presence with a feeding opportunity. This process, known as food conditioning or habituation, causes them to lose their natural wariness and actively approach people, docks, sidewalks, and backyards.

This creates a serious public safety concern. A food-conditioned alligator learns that something small near a person may represent food. As a result, a small dog on a leash or a pet near the shoreline can resemble the prey items the animal has previously received from people. The alligator is not acting out of aggression or malice; it is responding to learned behavior. Unfortunately, once an alligator becomes food-conditioned, removal and euthanasia is often the only management option.

Another important consideration is that alligators are remarkably difficult to detect. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils sit on the top of their heads, allowing nearly their entire body to remain submerged. In the dark waters common throughout the Grand Strand, even a large alligator may be virtually invisible until it moves. The absence of a visible alligator should never be interpreted as the absence of an alligator.

Simple precautions dramatically reduce the likelihood of conflict:

Never feed an alligator. It is illegal in South Carolina and is the primary cause of nuisance behavior.

Maintain a safe distance from the water’s edge. Avoid standing or lingering along shorelines, particularly during dawn, dusk, and nighttime when alligators are generally more active.

Keep pets on a short leash and away from pond edges. Dogs naturally resemble prey and their movements can attract an alligator’s attention.

If your property borders a pond, always inspect the shoreline before allowing pets into the yard. Even fenced yards are not completely secure, as alligators are capable climbers and can pass beneath or through some fence designs. Check your backyard before letting your children or pets out as they could be inside your gate.

Never allow children or pets to play unsupervised near ponds or canals.

Observe alligators from a distance and allow them to remain wild.

Successful wildlife management is not about eliminating native predators from the landscape. It is about reducing the behaviors that lead to conflict. In coastal South Carolina, alligators are a permanent component of our ecosystem. There will always be another alligator available to occupy suitable habitat. The most effective long-term management strategy is maintaining wild alligators that continue to avoid people while preventing the human behaviors that create dangerous animals.

Respect their space, never feed them, supervise children and pets near the water, and remember that coexistence is not only possible, it is the foundation of successful wildlife conservation in coastal communities.

Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center brings together waterfowl and wetland professionals, agency partners, researchers, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders for our Annual Advisory Panel Meeting. This meeting provides an opportunity to share current research, discuss emerging conservation challenges, and gather valuable input that helps guide the future direction of the Center's research and outreach programs.

This year's meeting featured research presentations spanning wetland ecology, waterfowl conservation, PFAS and microplastics, drone technology, Carolina Bays, coastal rice field management, and more, followed by an interactive advisory discussion with our stakeholders.

Two Ph.D. students from our center, Aksh*t Suthar and Scott William Binger, recently attended the Society of Wetland Scientists Annual Meeting 2026 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Both students presented their research findings and engaged with wetland scientists from around the world. Their research focused on the ecological value and management of historical rice fields for waterfowl and the Carolina Bay wetlands and their health biotic indicators.

Staff Biologist and Ph.D. student Crystal Anderson traveled to Oxford, United Kingdom, to present her research at the 2026 Pathways Europe: Human and Wildlife Wellbeing Conference. Her work explores how community gardens can increase conservation self-efficacy, environmental stewardship, and community engagement in coastal wetland regions.

Drawing from the human dimensions of wildlife conservation, Anderson’s research examines how community-centered approaches can create meaningful opportunities for public participation in conservation. By integrating environmental education, pollinator conservation, and food production, her work helps bridge the gap between conservation science, policy, and community needs. The research emphasizes that lasting conservation outcomes depend not only on protecting wildlife and habitats, but also on empowering people to become active participants in conservation.
