Fire Prevention Week may be ending — but fire prevention doesn’t. 🔥

This week we talked about the rechargeable devices all around our homes:

🔌 Check your cords and chargers.
📱 Charge devices on a hard, open surface.
👀 Charge where you can see them.
⚠️ Know the warning signs of a battery problem.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make safe charging a family habit.

You don’t have to remember every post Smokey shared this week.

Remember this:

Buy it right. Charge it right. Recycle it right.

Small choices around the devices we use every day can help prevent a fire.

Thanks for spending Fire Prevention Week with Smokey. 🐾🔥

Family Safety Saturday 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

All week we’ve talked about safer charging.

Today, let’s turn it into a family rule.

Pick one place in your home where phones, tablets, laptops, and rechargeable devices can charge safely.

Make it somewhere that is:

🔌 Near a proper outlet
🪵 On a hard, open surface
👀 Where you can see it
🚪 Away from exits and escape routes
🛏️ Not on a bed, couch, or under a pillow

Then teach the kids one simple rule:

If a device gets unusually hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, or makes unusual noises — unplug it only if it is safe to do so, stop using it, and tell an adult.

One charging spot.
One set of family rules.
One safer home.

Quick Friday check 🔥🔋

Pick up the device you’re reading this on.

Does it get unusually hot while charging?
Is the case separating or bulging anywhere?
Have you noticed a strange smell or sound?

Now check the other rechargeable devices around your house.

See something that doesn’t look right? Stop using it.

Sometimes fire prevention starts with noticing that something has changed.

Fire Safety Friday 🔥

Your device may warn you before a lithium-ion battery fails.

Watch for:

🔥 Unusual or excessive heat
🔋 Swelling or a change in shape
👃 A strange or unusual odor
💧 Leaking
👂 Hissing, popping, or other strange noises

If something doesn’t look, smell, sound, or feel right, stop using the device.

Don’t keep charging it to “see if it gets better,” and don’t ignore a swollen or damaged battery.

Smokey says 🔥
When a battery gives you a warning, listen.

The Answer 🔥

Yesterday, we asked:

Which charging setup is safest?

✅ Best Answer: C. A tablet charging on a hard, open surface with an undamaged cord and the correct charger.

Here’s why:

🔥 Charging creates heat.

Phones, tablets, laptops, power banks, and other lithium-ion battery devices need room for that heat to escape.

🛏️ Beds and pillows can trap heat.
Even if you’re using the correct charger, covering a device or charging it on bedding can make it harder for heat to dissipate.

🛋️ Couches and upholstered furniture aren’t ideal charging surfaces either.
Soft materials can hold heat and are combustible.

🔌 Use the right charger and an undamaged cord.
If a charger, cable, battery, or device is damaged, stop using it.

✅ A safer charging setup is:

• A hard, stable surface
• Plenty of open air around the device
• The correct charging equipment
• An undamaged cord and plug
• Away from bedding, paper, clothing, and other things that can burn

One simple rule for the whole family:

Charge it where you can see it — and where it can breathe.

🌦️ Weather Wednesday Question

Which storm cleanup job do you usually tackle first?

🌳 Limbs and branches
🪑 Patio and yard stuff
🗑️ Trash and debris
🚗 Checking the driveway/road

Or are you the smart one who waits until everything dries out? 😄

🌦️ Weather Wednesday

➡️ After the storm, look up before you clean up.

Once the rain stops, it’s tempting to head outside and start picking up the yard.

Take a look around first.

⚡ Watch for downed power lines
Treat every downed line as energized. Stay away from it and anything it may be touching.

🌳 Look for damaged limbs
Broken branches can remain caught overhead and fall without warning.

💧 Watch for standing water
Water can hide electrical hazards, debris, holes, and other dangers.

🏠 Check for damage from a safe location
If something looks unstable, damaged, or unsafe, don’t climb on it or try to move it yourself.

🚒 Give emergency crews room to work
If responders or utility crews are working nearby, keep your distance and keep roads and driveways accessible.

The storm may be over.

The hazards may not be.

Take a minute. Look around. Then start cleaning up.

Stay ready. Stay safe.

Quick check before bed tonight. 🔌

Where is your phone usually charging?

📱 Nightstand
🍳 Kitchen counter
🛋️ Couch
🛏️ On the bed
🤷 Somewhere different every night

No judgment from Smokey. 🐾

But during Fire Prevention Week, it’s a good time to look at where everyone in the house charges their devices.

Hard. Flat. Open. Uncovered.

What’s your usual charging spot?
