Recently, The Baron, our California king snake, was exhibiting some unusual behavior. He was biting his tail over and over. This can be caused by several things. Too hot of temperatures, too small of an enclosure, he is hungry, or it could mean he is in pain. My vet took some radiographs and we discovered he has arthritis in his tail. He was given some pain meds, an antibiotic in case he was sick with something else, and silver sulfadiazine cream. He also receives betadine baths. So far he is feeling much much better and yesterday he even shed in one complete piece! If your animal is ever exhibiting strange behavior, especially self-mutilation, always get a vet involved so you can determine if it is medically related.
