Professor, winemaker, grape grower, and co-owner of Silver Thread Vineyard — Paul Brock has a passion for keeping busy! When he's not out in the vineyard or in the cellar at Silver Thread, Paul is one of our Professors of Viticulture and Wine Technology here at FLCC.
He organizes the Biointensive Grape Grower group in the Finger Lakes, a local regenerative viticulture group, and is the former coordinator of our A.A.S. in Viticulture and Wine Technology degree program, having advised hundreds of students through the program.
Previously, Paul did winemaking consulting in the Finger Lakes for The Gotham Project, a company that marketed keg wine to New York City and nationally, where he procured grapes and oversaw their production at a neighboring winery. He has worked as a commercial winemaker in both the Finger Lakes (Lamoreaux Landing, Ravines, and Keuka Lake Vineyards) and Marlborough, New Zealand (Whitehaven).
Paul holds an M.S. in Enology and Viticulture from Cornell University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has earned a wine judge certification from the American Wine Society and a Level Three Advanced Certificate in Wines and Spirits from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust of London.
Paul is driven by his desire to learn about and explain classical and cutting-edge techniques useful to small-scale winemaking and vineyard operations. His current interests include developing and practicing regenerative viticultural techniques that reduce synthetic pesticides while focusing on regenerating soil health and balanced vine nutrition to achieve high-quality grapes for wine production.
