New York science teachers participaged in hands-on lessons designed by Cornell IPM and Cornell AgriTech scientists and a Geneva City School District teacher last week.

Before this summer, CCE intern Edmund Hod ’29 had never set foot in a cow or sheep pasture.

Weeks later, he was dragging fields for ticks, identifying dung beetles under a microscope, counting parasite eggs in sheep samples and doing fieldwork on his own.

The CALS entomology major spent the summer working with Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County, the Hudson Valley Research Laboratory and Cornell IPM on livestock pest management research. Along the way, he helped monitor farms across the Capital Region and Hudson Valley, tested CO₂ traps for Asian longhorned ticks and created an information sheet for livestock producers.

There were also the less predictable parts — sheep that started recognizing him, a calf licking his hair and helping herd escaped cows across the road.

By the end, Edmund said he was surprised by just how much he had experienced and learned in nine weeks, and grateful for the chance to explore so many sides of entomology so early in his Cornell career.

Our 2026 neonicotinoid field days took us across the state--from
Argyle to Hamburg--and connected us with nearly 800 growers, crop consultants, certified crop advisors, industry representatives, crop managers and policymakers.

We shared our research on alternatives to neonicotinoid insecticides, talked about pollinator health, toured trial plots and fielded questions on the Birds and Bees Protection Act with the people who help make New York an agricultural powerhouse.

Youth working with the Blueprint Geneva Environmental Justice Program learned that recognizing beneficial insects can be fun during a recent visit with Cornell Integrated Pest Management Biocontrol Specialist Amara Dunn-Silver.

The students learned how the importance of natural enemies of pests, participated in a scavenger hunt and showed off what they learned by creating beneficial insect-themed art.
