HWS Writing Colleagues Program

HWS Writing Colleagues Program Writing Colleagues help students become independent leaders through strengthening their ability to read, write, and think about complex ideas and texts.

The Writing Colleagues Program, founded by Cheryl Forbes over twenty-five years ago, is a curriculum-based peer-tutoring program that serves Hobart and William Smith Colleges by providing well-trained embedded tutors in courses across the disciplines and by providing the Center for Teaching and learning with carefully selected and experienced writing fellows. These talented HWS students have compl

eted WRRH 335, a course that consists of rigorous reading and writing practices with the intention of providing each student with the critical thinking and reflective skills necessary to work with peers at HWS. After completing the Writing Colleagues Seminar, students become qualified to work with professors in a series of field placements. It is here where they will lend support to other writers and continue to develop their own skills as both peer mentors and writers. This semester we have 18 writing colleagues in placements across disciplines. With their diverse backgrounds, unique abilities and enthusiasm for learning and sharing ideas, we know these students will make great partners in learning through writing.
