Muslim Women in Pop Culture and Media: Resistance and Representation
Friday, March 24 from 3-4:30 pm in Welles 26

This talk by Dr. Farha Ternikar (Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Women's & Gender Studies at Le Moyne College) explores the representation of Muslim women in social media and popular culture through an intersectional and transnational feminist lens. In particular, Ternikar draws attention to new representations of Muslim women both in online spaces but also in television shows like Miss Marvel. This new scholarship not only challenges hegemonic stereotypes of Muslim women “beyond hijab” but also offers new insight into how we can study Muslim women using popular culture.

This panel discussion will focus on the value of prison education programs and the challenges facing formerly incarcerated people as they re-enter society. We have reached 10 majors for the first time -- we want to meet you, and you to meet one another! In addition, the museum has a suffrage exhibit open.

Following the 2 PM Sat Aug 313 living history presentation, "Susan B Anthony: Is It a Crime to Vote?" in the Alice Austin Theatre, SUNY Geneseo, join us for a panel discussion on Susan B Anthony and her Legacy, featuring author/performer Christina Rausa, Provost Stacey Robertson, History Chair Justin Behrend, and President and CEO of the National Susan B Anthony House & Museum, Deborah Hughes. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Cathy Adams (History, Women's and Gender Studies, coordinator of Black Studies).
