Wondering what you and your student should pack when coming to Geneseo? How about what NOT to pack? Below are 5 Items that commonly violate residence hall fire safety rules:
🔌Nonlisted multioutlet adapters—All such devices must be tested and certified in accordance with UL, CUL, or ETL standards and labeled accordingly. They must also include surge protection and may not be combined with power strips, extension cords, or other multiplug adapters (no daisy chaining).
🪢Extension cords—Extension cords cannot be used as permanent sources of power and are not permitted for use in residence halls under the Fire Code.
💡High Amperage Devices not properly plugged in—Allowable appliances such as microfridges and refrigerators must be connected only to a wall outlet and may not be plugged into power strips, extension cords, or multioutlet adapters.
🚭Smoking paraphernalia—Smoking and all smoking paraphernalia are prohibited in residence hall rooms. Tampering with smoke or firesafety devices (e.g., smoke detectors, alarms) is strictly prohibited, constitutes a misdemeanor, and results in a formal conduct process.
🕯Candles and openflame items—Candles, even unused/unlit candles that are there for décor or scent, are prohibited in residence hall rooms, including unused or decorative candles. Similar items capable of producing an open flame are banned in all residential buildings.
