Dear KIPP Gaston Families,

As you might be aware, there was an incident this afternoon involving gunshots fired near GCP Primary School after dismissal. No students or staff were injured. School officials immediately activated shelter-in-place plans. Local law enforcement was notified and is currently investigating the incident.

To allow them to continue to do so, regular classes and after-school activities for students at KIPP Gaston Primary, KIPP Gaston Middle, and Pride High are canceled tomorrow, Friday, April 28. This school closure only impacts our Gaston campus; classes at KIPP Halifax will not be affected.

Events like this bring up a broad range of emotions for everyone in our school community. We are committed to supporting every member of the KIPP Gaston family, and will offer counseling support to students and staff who desire it. Our goal is to make space for people to share, feel, and support one another.

We remain wholly committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on our campuses. We have strong measures in place to ensure the safety and security of all of our students and staff, and will continue to evaluate and build on those measures regularly so they remain as strong as possible.

Should local law enforcement provide additional details that impact our students and families, we will share the information.

On March 23rd, we will be hosting our 1st Family Game Night!!! Come enjoy a night full of family fun and fellowship. This night will include BINGO, UNO, Chess, Family Feud, and more. Good evening parents, I hope everyone has had a great holiday weekend.

Quarter testing will begin tomorrow, January 17th. Scholars will report to their first period classes at 8:00 a.m. The testing schedule is as follow: Tuesday: History, Wednesday: English, Thursday: Science and Friday: Math. Scholars are encourage to get a good nights rest, study their material, and eat a good breakfast to start off their morning. Below you will see the testing schedule.

All scholars are expected to be in our full dress code on Monday. Our dress code consists of KIPP shirts, black, blue, gray or khaki pants and KIPP or college outerwear. College shirts and jeans, without rips or frays, are allowed on Fridays only. Families, please support your scholar with meeting the expectations every day.

Families, we also need your support with encouraging all scholars to be on time to school and each class. School begins at 8am. Scholars can arrive as early as 7:30am. Every instructional minute matters so that scholars can get the instruction needed to be successful on EOCs, AP exams and the ACT. Scholars who are late to school and class miss important instruction.

Students are expected to be in dress code daily.
Students are able to wear conducive outerwear (unzipped coats and jackets) as long as they are in dress code.
KIPP labeled sweatpants are permissible as a part of the school’s uniform.

Good Evening, Pride High Community,

We hope this message finds you all well! We wanted to acknowledge an important event that happened at school today. For the past decade and a half, we have been a school dedicated to social justice and teaching our Prides how to stand up for their rights when they feel they are not being seen or heard. Today, the day before an important election in our state and country, a number of our students left their classrooms during 3rd Period to express their frustration with a number of policies that we re-instituted (or introduced) this school year and the way in which those policies are being implemented.

We think our students’ frustrations and feelings are always valid, and, in the spirit on which Pride High and KIPP Gaston were founded, we want to encourage all our Prides to come to us when they feel they are not being adequately heard. It is in that spirit that we are modifying our schedule tomorrow to allow for us to hear from all our Prides:

We are dedicated to listening to all the voices of the Pride High community while keeping a rigorous and joyful academic environment. We might not always agree on everything, but we are always dedicated to creating the space to come together to talk about our frustrations, feelings, and possible solutions to injustices (especially if it is our community that is perpetuating the injustice).

Congratulations to our scholars of the month!!

Last Friday, our scholars of the month attended a luncheon with our Principal and Director of School Operations.

Our core value of the month is Leadership. These scholars exemplified leadership everyday by being in dress code, being on time, and showing true Panther Pride. Congratulations again to our scholars of the month. We are certainly proud of you!
