Being an online student doesn't have to get in your way when it comes to getting involved on campus.

Just ask Gabriel Ashbach. He started his journey in HVAC before attending IU Northwest and basically lives on campus. Today, he's pursuing his degree entirely online while serving as our Student Government Association President, director for theater productions and staying active in campus life.

Gabriel Ashbach became SGA President, media leader, theatre director and more despite pursuing an online degree

The Indiana University Police Department (IUPD) advises all students, faculty, staff and visitors that traffic control barricades located along eastbound 33rd Avenue have been intentionally positioned to ensure public safety and proper traffic flow.

Unauthorized removal, tampering with, or bypassing of these physical traffic control devices is strictly prohibited under state law and campus regulations. Operating a vehicle past established closure markers poses a severe safety hazard to pedestrian and vehicular traffic alike.

IUPD officers are actively monitoring the area. Strictly enforced compliance is in effect, and drivers found violating traffic control measures or moving barricades will be subject to immediate traffic citations, fines, or further administrative action. Please utilize designated alternative routes to exit campus safely.

In response to extended power outages affecting communities across Northwest Indiana, Indiana University Northwest is opening the lobby of the John W. Anderson Library/Conference to provide community members with access to device charging. The building is located at 130 W. 35th Avenue, Gary, Indiana, 46408. Community members can only enter the building using the 35th Avenue entrance.

Three Power Towers can be found in the building’s lobby, where members of the public may charge phones and other electronic devices during the following hours:

**Saturday, August 22: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
**Sunday, August 23: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Monday, August 24 – Thursday, August 27: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Friday, August 28: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

** Indicating special hours due to the power outages. The lobby is not traditionally open on these days.

Please note that the remainder of the IU Northwest campus will be closed through Sunday, August 23, and will reopen Monday, August 24.

IU Northwest has resumed normal campus operations as of today, August 20. We look forward to welcoming our faculty and staff back to campus after being away for more than a week.

Please note, however, power has not yet been restored to the Arts & Sciences Building or Cedar Hall, as both buildings are on a separate circuit. While we are hopeful power will be restored soon, we do not currently have an estimated time for restoration.

The RedHawk Café and Little RedHawk Café will be closed Thursday, August 20, and Friday, August 21. The first floor of the library remains closed for carpet replacement. There will be no library services available. The second and third floors will be open only to faculty and staff who do not yet have access to their offices.

Please use extreme caution while driving in and around the City of Gary. Significant storm damage remains throughout the area and many streetlights are not operational.

A campus update from our Chancellor:

"Dear RedHawk community,

After a challenging week, I am grateful to share some positive news: power was restored to the IU Northwest campus this afternoon. Despite this progress, we will remain in limited operations on Wednesday, August 19. I ask that all students, faculty and non-essential staff continue to stay away from campus while our facilities team thoroughly assesses our buildings and infrastructure to ensure they are safe and ready for our community.

Please continue to monitor your email and text messages closely for updates about when we can safely welcome everyone back to campus. Over the past week, this unexpected closure has required tremendous patience and flexibility from our entire community. I recognize the disruption it has caused and I am deeply grateful for the way our students, faculty and staff have adapted, supported one another and continued to move forward together.

Thank you for your understanding, resilience and continued commitment to IU Northwest. I look forward to seeing our campus filled with RedHawks again very soon.

With gratitude,

Chancellor Arrick Jackson"

We wish all our students the best of luck in your own recovery efforts, and we can’t wait to see you on campus next week.
