Maggie Lena Walker may not have officially graduated from an HBCU, but she was so dope in her get-down that Virginia Union University bestowed upon on her an honorary master’s degree in 1925. At the start of the pandemic, leveraging her 25+ years working as an award-winning TV editor and producer in #Hollywood, Howard alum TeeJ Mercer and her crew hit the internet streets and raised over $1 million in cash & prizes. It was all given away in a series of virtual Bingo games to the 2020 grads of HBCUs who’d had their graduations snatched. Shortly after, MIDM was created when TeeJ learned a social worker drove one of her new HBCU babies to school, pulled up to the curb, and dropped her off to weather her transition alone. TeeJ resolved, “not on my watch!” And the Mafia was born!
