History:
During the summer of 1997 the Founder, Tavetta Patterson, moved out of state to attend college based on her dreams. However, during the summer of 1998 she found herself back at home because she had a dream, but no plan to support that dream. As a first generation college student, she also did not have a support team to help her learn how to navigate through college. During the summer of 1
998, while attending class on the campus of Ivy Tech she was asked by another student, “If you abandon the ship who will help turn the community around?” That one question led her to discover her purpose in life; which is to help children. She thought about that question and made a very conscious decision to be a part of the solution to make her community better. Since 1998 she have volunteered to mentor students and help students plan for their post secondary options which may include college, trade school, an apprenticeship program or building a business. In 2006, she began the process of establishing a 501c3 non profit organization. May 22, 2009 is the official date the paperwork was processed for Gary Life Education Initiative Incorporated to be operated as an official organization. With no start up funding for the organization; no paid staff; no state or federal funding she has been able to provide services that benefit 9,000 students. This year an average of 130 students participate in programs every week. Students receive mentoring, youth leadership development, college and career prep. Students also receive the opportunity to attend college tours. The main goal is to ensure that students graduate high school with a solid plan and an understanding of their post secondary options. We fully understand that in order to change the world it begins with providing educational opportunities for ALL children!
