Cemetery preservation isn’t a one day job. It takes months of research, weeks of physical work then a lifetime of maintenance.

We started on Garrett Hill Saturday. An anonymous donor has reached out and will be working today to coordinate more strong bodies to help us preserve one small piece of our towns history.

Everyone has a story that led them to genealogy and Alicia’s spans thousands of miles. Her great great grandfather was a stone mason who carved his own daughter’s headstone.

Garrett Hill Cemetery was the site of some work this morning. Upike students came to help us clear brush and kudzu vines. It’s not cleared by any means but we did put a dent in it.

In 1920 the Dawkins Lumber Company of Ashland opened a sawmill on the Licking River in Magoffin County and built a town around it. They named it Royalton, for the Royal Bank of Canada, which had put up the money. The company owned the timber, the logging cars, the locomotives and the track, and it had chartered its own railroad eight years before the first board was cut.
