In the Reggio Emilia approach, families are not simply invited to watch their child’s learning—they are welcomed as an integral part of it. Parents are their child’s first teachers, their most familiar faces, and the people who know them in ways no one else can. They bring stories, experiences, traditions, and insights that help educators better understand and support each child. Family partnership is more than an added feature of a quality early childhood program; it is at the heart of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. It is essential in truly supporting the child. When families and educators work together, children feel supported, valued, and connected, creating a strong foundation for learning, belonging, and growth.

JAM Early Education was awarded a grant from Community Foundation DeKalb County to expand the reach of literacy materials to the community by installing a Little Library.
A Little Library is a simple but meaningful way to bring literacy directly into the community. Its purpose is to make books easily accessible to everyone. By placing books in a familiar, welcoming location, a Little Library removes barriers that may prevent someone from visiting a traditional library or purchasing books. The intention of a Little Library goes beyond simply providing free books. It is an invitation to be resourceful while discovering, sharing, connecting, and learning. Children can choose a book that sparks their imagination, families can read together, adults can discover a new author, and neighbors can share stories and recommendations. The exchange of books also creates a sense of ownership and participation—everyone has the opportunity to both give and receive. JAM Center intends for the Little Library to encourage curiosity, conversation, connection within the Garrett community, and lifelong learning.
At JAM Center, we recognize the importance literacy exposure provides in creating a connected, informed, and thriving community. We invite our community to take part in expanding access to literacy for all community members.

This October, swim lessons are being made more accessible to families in our community thanks to the generosity of Wible Realty!

Through their sponsorship, a limited number of swim class scholarships will be available, giving children the opportunity to build confidence in the water, learn important water skills and become stronger swimmers — at no cost to their families.

We’re incredibly grateful to Wible Realty for investing in local kids and helping us make these life-saving skills available to more families. 💙

Our classrooms are designed intentionally for the children who inhabit the space. We think about their needs and development to plan and create work to align.
What does that mean?
Let’s dive a little deeper into the thinking that fuels our planning and preparation of the space.
Our teachers study the development of the ages they work with. They are familiar with the sensitive periods, milestones, and developmental leaps taking place for the students in their classroom. By studying and understanding development, our teachers can plan for it. Through this, our toddler teachers know that hand eye coordination is a skill that is always developing for children. As children move through their day, playing freely or working, they are refining the development of their hand eye coordination. Although it shows up naturally within their day, it is also something we still intentionally plan for.
The work pictured is lacing pool noodles onto a string. It was created keeping in mind what skills the students in the classroom are working on. As we think about providing work that allows children to grow skills from simple to complex, this work can meet the needs of all students within the classroom. It creates an opportunity to practice hand eye coordination for everyone! It also provides exposure to sorting, stacking and patterning for children ready for more of a challenge.
This is just one work that meets the need for varying complexity of 9 different children in different ways. It was planned, created, and introduced to the students with their needs at the root of the idea. When we think about children and keep their needs as the focus, we create child centered and led classrooms.

Our Infant Classroom Collaborative project is still up for auction! Make a bid!

Through tactical play, infant students created this canvas by dropping different objects dipped into paint onto the canvas from various heights. We assigned a color to each object to see the different marks and patterns each object made. This gives an opportunity for the students to learn about colo...
