Happy Birthday Dallas Association for Parent Education!! Back in 1959 parents were asking the same question/s they are today... How do I parent my children well? That question didn't start in 1959 but DAPE did. 5 women decided that they wanted access to more information and they knew others did, as well. 67 years later, we have changed (some) in method, but never in mission. We continue to give access to high quality parent information to ALL parents and caregivers.

IF you want to celebrate with us by donating to DAPE, you can use the QR code in the graphic above or visit our website at www.dallasparents.org and click on the DONATE button at the top! You can also send a check to 801 W. Avenue B Garland, TX 75040.

Ways your donation helps: $16 pays our WARMLINE phone bill for the month (which is a free support for parents seeking information). Scholarships:
$60 covers a 6-week parenting class for a parent in need.
$60 covers a 2-hour Newborn Care Class for a parent in need. $100 covers a childbirth class for a parent in need.

ANY amount helps families have access to the education they need!

A baby’s amygdala is already well developed at birth. And the connections between the amygdala and other parts of the brain continue to develop rapidly during infancy.

Connecting to a large network of the brain including the brainstem, the amygdala helps our brain notice and respond to emotionally important information. Newborns can recognize familiar sensory experiences, such as a familiar voices, smells, sights and touch, while discomfort or stress can activate physiological responses such as a faster heart rate, rapid breathing, a tense body or a grimace.

These early months are an important period of brain development. Research shows that wiring of the amygdala changes substantially during infancy, and individual differences in amygdala connectivity present shortly after birth have been associated with later differences in fear, sadness and internalizing mental health symptoms by age 2.

We have become a society of people who cannot prevent our own children from being killed in their classrooms—and who do not much mind the killing of other people’s children by weapons of...

We have to learn to separate what looks impressive from what actually matters.

A child sitting quietly, completing worksheets, memorizing facts, and following directions may look more advanced. That doesn't mean they're developing a stronger brain.

If pushing formal academics earlier truly led to better long-term outcomes, we would have decades of evidence proving it by now.

We don't.

Instead, the research continues to point us back to the same conclusion: children learn best through play, movement, relationships, meaningful experiences, and time. Development cannot be rushed. It follows a biological sequence, whether we respect it or not.

We can keep making childhood look more academic, or we can start making it more developmentally appropriate. The research is becoming increasingly clear that those are not the same thing. Our children deserve decisions grounded in development, not appearances. Be informed. Be intentional.

What looks like a small moment to an adult can feel very different to a child.

When the brain detects threat, it activates a response. That response isn’t about defiance. It’s about protection.

When adults understand that shift, they can act differently in real time. At Whole Child Initiative, this is a key part of the work—helping organizations recognize those moments and respond in ways that create more consistent, supportive environments.
