In the previous video, the New Approach to the Highland Bagpipe Scale, I forget a few basic note changes. While relatively straightforward, I wanted to include it here so nothing is left out!
Matt Willis Bagpiper
Professional bagpiper, educator, and content creator. Passionate about making the Highland bagpipes more accessible and enjoyable for all!
I perform for events, teach pipers worldwide, and run a YouTube channel with tutorials, reviews, and performances.
Today’s upload is all about my new approach to teaching the basic bagpipe scale!
Rather than simply learning the scale from low G to high A and back down again, I’ve broken it into smaller, more manageable steps. The first part focuses on note changes that require only lifting fingers OR only lowering fingers. Later, we’ll tackle the more challenging note changes that require lifting and lowering fingers simultaneously.
One of my goals as an instructor has always been to break bagpipe playing down into the smallest possible steps so that anyone willing to put in the effort can successfully learn this challenging instrument. I hope this approach helps make the journey a little easier!

I have probably had more positive feedback from pipers about this video than any other video I've made so far. So many folks have shared with me how these exercises really freed up their fingers to allow them to really master the gracenotes and embellishments in our music. Check it out!

A quick update:
I’m going to start uploading my YouTube video catalog here on Facebook. YouTube will still be my primary platform for new long-form content, but I’d rather not have 10 years of online bagpipe content living in only one place.
Since so many of you already follow me here, and my short-form videos often do quite well on Facebook, it makes sense to use this page as a second home for lessons, performances, reviews, and other piping content.
So if you start seeing some older videos mixed in with the new ones, that’s why. Thanks for following along and supporting the channel!
So let's start strong, with my most popular educational video, the introduction to the practice chanter!
