Last night, I had the opportunity to present my credit workshop, What the FICO?!, to the Texas Christian University (TCU) college students in the TRIO Student Support Services program. The students were engaged and asked great questions throughout. By the end, they learned how costly bad credit can be and how great credit can save you thousands to hundreds of thousands! Thank you TCU SSS for having me as a guest speaker.
Tonight, I was honored at the Tri-State TRIO conference in Des Moines as the 2023 recipient of the Iowa TRIO Achiever Award! Although I could not be there in person, I am truly humbled by this honor and recognition as TRIO means so much to me. Thank you Iowa TRIO, and especially Caleb and Paula for nominating me.
I will always credit TRIO for making the biggest impact on changing the trajectory of my life. I only hope that I make a fraction of the impact that TRIO has on me on the students I work with. Thank you to Paula Plath, Dr. Jane Agyeman, and Japannah Kellogg for being my difference makers and planting seeds in me to be greater! Keep planting those seeds!

So I did a thing! I became a Certified Financial Education Instructor since so much of what I do with helping students with careers and college/education has financial implications. As a higher education professional, I want to make sure that students are making sound financial decisions when choosing a college and career. The decisions students make between the ages of 17-25 are crucial to their financial wellness and I want to educate them on how to be money smart from the start!

Happy First-Gen Day!
Getting to college is a great accomplishment and graduating is even greater, especially if you are part of the first generation to do so in your family. From one first-gen to another (and potential first-gen), here is my advice based on my experience and expertise in higher ed:
✅ Surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed; not just friends but mentors and programs that have a mission of student success such as TRIO, GEARUP, Avid, etc).
✅Use all of the resources your campus offers when it comes to student services. Show up to the mock interview that Career Services offers, get help with your resume, or find an internship. You do not have to do it all alone. Those resources are there to help YOU!also understanding how much you will have to pay to attend. Starting at a community college makes financial sense in many situations and doesn't change your outcome of getting a degree.

✅ Count the cost! Getting a college degree should not leave you in unmanageable student loan debt! Find ways to cover the cost and reduce the cost. Students of color and first-generation students are more likely to have student loan debt and more likely to have MORE student loan debt.
✅ There are always scholarships that you can apply to. You don't have to wait until your senior year of high school, and you can apply for scholarships even if you are pursuing advanced degrees. You have to find the money, be eligible, and apply anything beyond that is out of your control, but at least give yourself a chance by applying.
I could go on. One day I'll write a book, but for now, You got this! Happy First-Gen Day!

Internships are a really valuable experience for students that can lead to future employment opportunities. the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program helps students find placement in an internship with federal agencies. You do not have to be Hispanic to apply. You can find out more information on the application process here: https://www.hacu.net/hacu/Apply.asp

If you know me, you know I am Pro TRIO! If it weren't for TRIO, I would have not made it TO college and THROUGH college. I had the pleasure of discussing the impact TRIO had on my life as a guest on the "Let's Talk TRIO" podcast with Juan Rivas.
Listen in to hear how this program affected me as a student (I participated in ETS, UB, and SSS), as a professional (advisor for ETS for 5 years), and now as a business owner of TIME with Janelle, LLC. Thank you Juan for all that you do to highlight TRIO stories and topics. I really enjoyed our conversation and hope you all will too.

The FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid) opens on October 1st at midnight CST. Filing the FAFSA is required if your student needs access to Federal Student Aid such as Pell Grant, Work Study, Federal Student Loans and other grants as well.
To sign the FAFSA electronically, you will need an FSA ID (this serves as your legal electronic signature). For dependent students, ONE parent needs to sign the FAFSA so he/she will need to have an FSA ID. Every student has to sign their own FAFSA so they will need their own FSA ID.
