The rain held off long enough to take this great group of folks on an edible and medicinal plant hike at Roundtop Mountain in Jasper, AR. Thanks to the Newton County Library for organizing it and the Newton County Resource Council for the use of this amazing place. We saw lots of Ozark spiderwort, green trillium, Solomon’s seal, false Solomon’s seal, pawpaw trees, redbud seed pods, spicebush, goldenseal, greenbrier, wild grape vines, gallium, whorled milkweed, violet leaves, oaks, hickories, maples, and more.

This great group of folks decided to bear the cold and came out for an animal tracks and signs hike today with Ozark Primitive Skills at Hobbs State Park. We saw tracks and signs from deer, canine, yellow bellied sapsucker, pileated woodpecker, armadillo, beaver, squirrel, and raccoon. Join Ozark Primitive Skills at Hobbs State Park this Saturday from 10am-2pm to learn about animal tracks and signs. Tracking is one of the best gateways into nature awareness and connection, and to understanding the relationships between animals and the other elements of the ecosystem.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration required.

We’ll meet at the Visitors Center before caravanning/carpooling to the Pigeon Roost area.

Primitive Skills Workshop: Animal Tracking this Saturday at 10:00 AM on Dec. 3! To successfully hunt animals for food, or to help identify any potential predators in your area that could put your family in danger, you need to be able to identify animal tracks. Participants will learn from skilled outdoorsman Eric Fuselier about animal ecology and the tracks and signs left behind by the species that call Hobbs State Park–Conservation Area their home. Meet at the Education Pavilion next to the Hobbs Visitor Center. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable shoes for hiking and bring water and a sack lunch. Recommended for ages 8 and up. No reservations are required.
