As we get ready to welcome our students back to Garfield Middle School, we want to share a few helpful tips for our incoming 6th graders and new GMS families! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Starting middle schoolโ€”or starting at a new schoolโ€”can come with a little stress and anxiety. That is completely normal! A little preparation ahead of time can help make those first few days easier and give students some extra confidence.

๐Ÿ” **Tip #1: Take the Stress Out of Lockers!**

Every student will receive a locker and a combination lock provided by GMS on the first day of school. Students must use the school-provided lock and are not permitted to bring their own.

One thing we have noticed over the years is that combination locks can take some getting used to! Students may find themselves standing at their lockers trying to remember which way to turn the dial, especially during those first few days.

**Our GMS tip:** Purchase an inexpensive combination lock and let your child practice at home before school begins. The practice lock stays at homeโ€”it is simply a way for them to get comfortable using a combination lock before Day 1.

Have them practice:

โžก๏ธ Turn RIGHT once
โฌ…๏ธ Turn LEFT twice
โžก๏ธ Turn RIGHT to the final number
๐Ÿ”“ Open!

The more they practice, the more comfortable and confident they will become.

Once students receive their locker information, we also recommend writing down their **locker number and combination** in a notebook or planner and taking a picture of the information with their phone as a backup.

And most importantly, remind your child that **they are not expected to know everything on Day 1!** Our teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff will be there to help students learn the routines and get comfortable.

A little practice now can mean a little less stress later!

**Practice the lock. Build the confidence. Start the year strong!** ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Garfield Middle School families, weโ€™re getting ready for the 2026โ€“2027 school year! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Important back-to-school information has been posted on the GMS homepage. We encourage families to review the information as we prepare for the start of school.

The student portal will open the week of August 18, at which time students will be able to view their homeroom numbers.

Please continue to check the GMS homepage and follow us on social media for important information and updates throughout the school year.

GARFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL
2026โ€“2027 SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST

Parents, we know youโ€™re used to the long elementary school supply lists, so you may be surprised when you see how short the Garfield Middle School list is!

The reason is simple: middle school is different from elementary school. In elementary school, your child may have one or two teachers covering multiple subjects. At GMS, students have six different teachers, with each teacher specializing in and teaching a specific subject.

Garfield is also a 1:1 technology district, meaning every GMS student receives a school-issued laptop to use as part of their education.

For the 2026โ€“2027 school year, all students will need:

๐Ÿ““ 6 individual notebooks โ€” one for each class:
โ€ข 1 Math
โ€ข 1 Language Arts
โ€ข 1 Science
โ€ข 1 Social Studies
โ€ข 1 Elective
โ€ข 1 Health

โœ๏ธ Pens and pencils

๐Ÿ“… A monthly planner is recommended, but not required. It can be helpful for keeping track of assignments, tests, activities, and important dates.

GMS will provide basic classroom materials such as rulers, additional paper, markers, and other supplies when needed.

Occasionally, a teacher may ask students to bring in a specific item for a special project or activity. If that happens, the teacher will communicate that information to students and families ahead of time.

There is no need to spend a fortune on school supplies! We want our students to come to school prepared, organized, and ready to learn.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back for an amazing 2026โ€“2027 school year at Garfield Middle School!

Message from Mr. Rigoglioso:

Dear Garfield Middle School Families,

We are pleased to share an update regarding the Garfield Middle School dress code.

Although Garfield Middle School has maintained an outstanding 99% student compliance rate with our current uniform policy, many parents asked if our students could have the same option as students in the elementary schools and Garfield High School after the Garfield Board of Education approved allowing black or khaki pants.

The Garfield Middle School administration met with our Home & School Association and listened to feedback from many parents throughout our school community. After reviewing those requests, we presented the recommendation to Superintendent Dr. Tomko, who supported the change. The recommendation was then presented to the Garfield Board of Education, which approved it.

Effective immediately, Garfield Middle School students may wear either black pants or khaki pants as part of the school uniform.

Please note that this change applies only to the color of the pants. All other dress code expectations remain in effect. Stretch leggings, yoga pants, bicycle shorts, volleyball shorts, and other form-fitting athletic wear are not considered uniform pants and are not permitted, regardless of color.

Additionally, black pants must be solid black and khaki pants must be solid khaki. Pants with oversized brand names, logos, stripes, graphics, or lettering running down the legsโ€”including Nike, Adidas, or similar athletic sweatpantsโ€”are not permitted as part of the school uniform. Students must wear plain, school-appropriate uniform pants that meet the dress code expectations.

Our school uniform shirt expectations also remain the same by grade level. Sixth grade students will wear green shirts, seventh grade students will continue to wear gray shirts, and eighth grade students will continue to wear blue shirts. All shirts must include the official Garfield School District logo. Families may also purchase uniform shirts from any vendor of their choice, provided they include the official Garfield School District logo. YNK Uniform Store in Clifton offers polo shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and long-sleeve shirts in all approved colors featuring the Garfield logo and made with high-quality materials.

We appreciate the continued support of our families and thank our Home & School Association, Superintendent Dr. Tomko, the Garfield Board of Education, and our parents for their valuable input and partnershipโ€ฆ Together, we will continue to maintain the high standards that make Garfield Middle School an outstanding place to learnโ€ฆ.If you have any questions or need additional clarification regarding the updated dress code, please contact the Garfield Middle School main office or email me directlyโ€ฆ [email protected]... We are always happy to assist you.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another successful school year

Sincerely,

Richard Rigoglioso

There has been some confusion circulating on social media regarding the Garfield Middle School dress code, so we'd like to provide some clarification.

Students are expected to wear: โ€ข Khaki-colored pants, shorts, or skirts โ€ข An official Garfield Middle School logo shirt in the appropriate grade-level color. Both crew neck and polo shirts are permitted, as long as they display the official Garfield Middle School logo.

Grade-Level Shirt Colors
๐ŸŸข 6th Grade โ€“ Green
โšช 7th Grade โ€“ Gray
๐Ÿ”ต 8th Grade โ€“ Navy Blue

Please note that plain shirts without the Garfield Middle School logo are not part of the dress code. Additionally, black pants are part of the Garfield High School dress code, not Garfield Middle School's.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping our students arrive at school dressed appropriately and ready to learn. If you have any questions about the dress code, please contact the Garfield Middle School main office.

Thank you for your continued support! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›
