Hope Ignites Northeastern Ohio

40 years of nurturing and guiding motivated young people to become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others.

Hope Ignites Northeastern Ohio (Formerly Boys Hope Girls Hope) was founded in 1986 to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in school and life. Our mission is to help academically capable and motivated children in need to meet their full potential and become young men and women for others by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities, and education through college. O

ur affiliate shares a common mission with 14 U.S. and 3 Latin American cities while utilizing structured programming adapted to the needs of each community, unique curriculum, and partnerships with local schools and universities. Service ‘pathways’ include residential homes for up to 18 Scholars; intensive year-round, out-of-school time programming for 150+ community-based Scholars in 6th-12th grade; and post-secondary advising and scholarship support through career launch for 70+ Scholars who have graduated our program and are currently enrolled in college or other post-secondary program.

For our 40 Stories for 40 Years campaign, we are proud to spotlight Bishop Jennings, a Hope Ignites Northeastern Ohio Collegian whose journey embodies family, opportunity, service, and legacy.

Bishop joined our Academy program in fifth grade after deciding with the guidance of his father and grandparents to embrace a new opportunity. With his family providing a strong foundation and Hope Ignites building alongside them, Bishop attended St. Edward High School before serving five years as a U.S. Navy aviation technician. Today, he studies environmental science at Cleveland State University and plans to use his education to help grow the Jenning’s family HVAC business which also celebrates 45 years.

Bishop’s story reflects what becomes possible when a young person, their family, and a community of support work together. Now, he is carrying that partnership forward by mentoring younger Hope Ignites Scholars and encouraging them to recognize the options available for their futures.

As another summer begins, we’re celebrating the growth of Hope Ignites Northeastern Ohio’s largest pathway: the Academy Program.

Originally launched in 2008 as Hope Prep, the program was created to extend our impact beyond the Residential Program. What began as a weekend and summer experience for fewer than 20 Scholars has grown into a thriving year-round program focused on academic success, social-emotional wellness, leadership development, and life readiness.

Today, more than 160 Scholars will participate in the Academy Program during the 2026–2027 program year.

Earlier this month volunteers from KeyBank's Neighbors Make the Difference Day and Higley Construction rolled up their sleeves to help prepare our campus for summer programming! From landscaping projects that beautified our grounds to making our scholars' favorite breakfast burritos, their support helped ensure we were ready to welcome students for a great summer.
