As a SLiCE leader, you’ll:

Community health starts with community leadership. 💙

As our 2025-2026 Newman Civic Fellow, Wren spent the past year turning her passion for health equity into action. This spring, she brought that vision to life by organizing a Community Health & Wellness Fair that connected students, local organizations, and community members with resources to support healthier lives.

From nursing students providing free vitals checks and practicing essential clinical skills, to Walgreens offering vaccinations, to local behavioral health organizations, fitness professionals, healthcare providers, and community partners sharing valuable resources- this event was all about making health more accessible.

The Newman Civic Fellowship, awarded by Campus Compact, recognizes student leaders who are committed to finding solutions to challenges facing their communities. Throughout the fellowship year, Fellows engage in leadership development, networking, and civic action while creating meaningful change both on campus and beyond.

Wren exemplified exactly what the fellowship is all about: bringing people together, expanding access to care, and strengthening the health of our community through service and collaboration.

We’re incredibly proud of your leadership, Wren, and grateful for the impact you’ve made at MWCC and beyond. ❤️💙

Our first RISE project has officially launched AND fully implemented their project!

Congratulations to Team Sprouting Joy- Justina Johnson and Wayne Jurgeleit- on successfully bringing their vision to life at Heywood Wakefield Commons in Gardner.

Their project set out to create opportunities for healthy socialization, hands-on activity, and connection through indoor gardening for senior residents. Thanks to their dedication- and the generosity of community supporters- they delivered far more than just a garden bed.

Together, they provided:
- Two raised garden beds (including a second bed that will be used outdoors!)
- Soil, seeds, grow lights, watering cans, gardening tools, gloves, and a gardening bench
- A personalized gardening guide created by Justina, complete with planting tips, companion planting ideas, and easy-to-follow instructions for residents.

Watching months of planning, fundraising, community partnerships, and hard work become a reality was an incredible reminder of what students can accomplish when they’re empowered to create positive change.

The Brewer Center team was proud to be there to celebrate this milestone alongside the residents and support Team Sprouting Joy as they officially implemented the very first RISE project.

This is exactly what Real Impact Through Student Engagement looks like.

Teamwork makes the dream work- and apparently helps you escape, too. 🔓🎉

The Brewer Center’s 4 SLiCE student leaders and 3 full-time staff members spent yesterday at The Gate Escape in Leominster for an end-of-year team-building outing. Through communication, problem-solving, and plenty of laughter, we escaped with time to spare and celebrated another successful year of civic engagement, service, and student leadership. 💙💚

Mount Wachusett Community College student Wren Stoddard will host a Community Health and Wellness Fair on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the South Café of the Gardner campus as part of their work as a 2025–2026 Newman Civic Fellow.

The event is designed to connect community members with healthcare resources, wellness organizations, and nursing students in an interactive and supportive environment focused on improving community health and expanding access to care.

A key feature of the fair will be a student-led vitals screening station organized in partnership with the Student Nurses Association. Nursing student volunteers will create a mock clinical “office” environment where community members can receive basic health screenings, including temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and heart and lung sound checks.

The initiative will allow nursing students to strengthen essential clinical and interpersonal skills while building meaningful connections with members of the community they may one day serve professionally.

The Health and Wellness Fair will also feature a Walgreens Pharmacy vaccine clinic offering walk-in vaccinations for COVID-19, shingles, pneumonia, and other immunizations. In addition, community organizations, fitness programs, clinics, and specialty medical facilities will provide educational resources, demonstrations, and information about local wellness services and programs.

Join us this Friday for a Health and Wellness Fair hosted by MWCC student leader and Newman Civic Fellow, Wren Stoddard!

As MWCC’s Newman Civic Fellow, Wren has continued her work in equity, inclusion, and community engagement by creating an event that brings students, local health care providers, wellness organizations, and community members together.

Stop by to connect with local clinics, hospitals, nursing and dental students, fitness centers, and health resources. Attendees can help future health care providers practice their skills, learn about local services and possible job opportunities, and access select vaccines available on site through Walgreens.

This event is free and open to the public with free food/refreshments provided/.
