💬In their own words … what STUDENTS said about school CULTURE during our February 2022 Portrait of a Graduate survey [continued]:

⭐“I would say I have the most opportunities to thrive when I’m in interactive classes, meaning the students and teachers talk with one another not only about academics but about other things going on and can build a sense of relationship and comfort to make it easier to work in that environment.”

⭐“[I am responsible] when people are making fun or being rude to another student and I stick up for them.”

⭐“My teachers definitely played a huge role in my success. I feel as though I can talk to certain ones which ends up helping my mental health and mindset towards school in the long run."

💬 In their own words … what STUDENTS said about school CULTURE during our February 2022 Portrait of a Graduate survey:

🎒“My classes force me to be responsible, because I know that in teamwork, if I don’t do my work, I badly affect all of my teammates' projects as well.”

📐“I feel like I have the most opportunity to connect at my school when I can learn with my friends and when we help each other solve problems. This is especially evident for me in math classes.”

👩🏽‍🏫“When teachers make me feel like I can do it and try to help me if I’m not understanding instead of giving me answers and expect I get it.”

⭐ Actress Emily Blunt once struggled so terribly with stuttering that she could barely hold a conversation. The stuttering - which was hereditary for her - began at age 7 and her parents tried therapy after therapy to try to help their daughter overcome the speech difficulty. 💬 Now an acclaimed and confident actress who rarely stutters, she credits a teacher who encouraged her at 12 years old to perform in the school play. He had noticed she spoke with ease when she impersonated people and suggested she play the role using an accent. Emily hesitantly accepted the role and ended up performing flawlessly, saying it felt freeing to play someone else. She continued acting and by around age 14, her stuttering started to disappear. It’s amazing what can happen when a teacher sees something special in you and inspires you to achieve. 🧡💙💚

🤗 Nominated by 38 of his students for the Honored National Teacher Award, John Ball is a history teacher who inspires kindness and makes learning fun. Mr. Ball’s teaching philosophy is built on trust: “Once you have trust, you have relationships. The learning will follow.”

🍎 Principal Donnie Hopper says of him, “Kids need someone they trust, someone who they know is looking out for them. And for so many kids, he’s that person. He’s the reason they want to come to school.”

And based on the student testimonies, they aspire to learn and do well in Mr. Ball's class because they know he genuinely cares about them.
