Taking blood samples from children can be difficult for the phlebotomist. Ensuring safety while accounting for a pediatric patient’s emotional and physical well-being is of the utmost importance.

Butterfly needles are recommended for accessing smaller, fragile veins. The use of low-volume collection tubes is also recommended to minimize the vacuum pressure that could otherwise cause vein collapse and minimize the volume of blood needed.

This week in class we focused our attention on pediatric patients and the use of butterfly needles.

This week in class we focus on capillary puncture sites. These sites are locations on the body where a small amount of blood can be collected from the capillaries. Capillaries are the tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins. Common capillary puncture sites include: the middle & ring finger as well as the heel of an infant.
