Something a student said struck me on Wednesday's class,
"I don't want to hold anyone in the class back."
It broke my heart a little bit.
You're in my class for one reason and one reason alone,
To come out a better guitarist than when you first came in.
When I was 16, I had a guitar duel with someone that was around 40.
Do you know what happened?
Yep...
I got my ass handed to me.
In return, he taught me an awesome soloing trick with harmonics and the whammy bar.
Sometimes being the worst, the class is the best.
People tend to root for the underdog.
I got doted on by middle-aged women back when I was learning to sew.
Whenever I've asked for help, 9 times out of 10, I got help.
Here's a secret.
People secretly love to help other people.
It makes them feel good by giving back.
As long as you're humble and eager to learn,
You'll never have to feel inferior about someone playing better or faster than you.
What's beautiful about having a group class with mixed skill levels is the synergy.
Aspiring players play their hardest and quickly level up.
Experienced players ask the right questions.
Everyone shares with those around them.
It was during jam sessions with players better than me that my skills and knowledge grew.
Everyone around you will be okay.
Don't compare yourself, everyone's journey is different.
Just focus on the guitar in your hands.
I'll see you soon. :-)
