EXCITING NEWS: Last night, GGUSD's Board of Education unanimously approved the renaming of Rosita Elementary School to Frank & Irene Palomino Elementary School, honoring a local family whose courage helped end school segregation in California.

The Palomino family was one of five plaintiff families in the landmark Mendez et al. v. Westminster case that challenged the segregation of Mexican American students and helped pave the way for Brown v. Board of Education.

The renaming effort was spearheaded by Board Trustee Walter Muneton, who connected district leaders with Andrew Palomino, grandson of Frank and Irene Palomino. As the district learned more about the family's history, it became clear that Rosita Elementary Schoolβ€”located directly across the street from the neighborhood the Palomino family called home for generationsβ€”was the ideal place to tell their story.

Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the school will proudly bear the Palomino name, connecting the campus to an important piece of local and national history and ensuring generations of students learn about the family's role in advancing educational equality.
