The summer is a time to remember the dead in Asia. In parts of Japan, the hungry ghost observance know as Obon is held in mid-August (or mid-July). In other Asian countries, this year's hungry ghost festivals are held in late August. The origin of hungry ghost festivals can be found in a Mahayana Buddhist scripture called the Ullambana Sutra.

Another major Buddhist holiday is quickly approaching. July 23 is Chokhor Duchen -- the commemoration of the Buddha's first teaching on the four noble truths to his first five disciples. His first sermon is called the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, meaning the "setting in motion of the wheel of dharma."
