Today was a first for some and last for others. It was the first day of school for kindergarten students, the first day at the Middle School for some and the first day at the high school for others. It was also the first day for dozens of new teachers in the district. For some it was their last first day!

The first day of school for GCPS is tomorrow (September 8). That means it's time to pay attention to school buses has they transport our children back and forth to school. Here are some reminders.

School Bus Safety Tips For Drivers:

Prepare to stop when a slowing bus has its overhead yellow lights flashing.
Stop at least 20 feet away from buses when red lights are flashing, unless driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway.
Slow down in or near school and residential areas.
Look for clues-such as safety patrols, crossing guards, bicycles, and playgrounds-that indicate children might be in the area.
Watch for children between parked cars and other objects.

Those who pass stopped school buses may be charged with civil infractions carrying a fine between $100 and $500. Violators may also be required to perform up to 100 hours of community service at a school.

Garden City students go back to school on Tuesday, September 8.

School bus safety is a shared responsibility, and we need everyone's help to ensure the safety of our kids. Drivers, please remember:

➡️ STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended.
➡️ SLOW DOWN and stay alert in school zones and near bus stops.
➡️ WATCH for children crossing the street and boarding or exiting buses.

Due to the impending inclement weather, we are changing the location and time for our "Bounce Back" event today.

Today's Bounce Back event will move to the Garden City Middle School Gym and run from 4:00 - 6:00 PM.

We will continue to host our community partners, and food vendors. Our first responder community and transportation team will continue to participate and have vehicles on display.

We apologize for the short notice regarding the venue change, but it appears Mother Nature is not going to cooperate with us today.

We hope to see you this evening from 4-6 PM at Garden City Middle School for our Welcome Back to School Event. You may enter at the GCMS GYM entrance.
