We are pleased to report the outstanding success of our recent Goalball Clinic, which was hosted on November 30th by the Adapted Physical Education program.

Twenty-five Adelphi students participated enthusiastically in the event, which was made possible by the invaluable assistance of New York Knights Goalball players. This clinic provided an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the sport, understand the rules and skills, and, most importantly, interact with athletes with visual impairment.

We would like to express my gratitude to John Wygand for his assistance in making this event a success. Additionally, I extend my appreciation to Lisa Santos for organizing the event, Berto Cerasi and Hanna Matatyaho for their efforts in promoting the clinic.

We are thrilled with the strong relationship we've established with the New York Knights Goalball team. It has been critical in fostering an inclusive environment and empowering our students to value diversity. The Goalball Clinic demonstrated our dedication that extends beyond the classroom to benefit both our students and the community. We intend to broaden our collaboration with various community organizations to advance the student learning in various aspects of physical education/activity and deepen inclusivity.

Once again, we would like to express my thanks to everyone who helped make the Goalball Clinic a success. Your dedication and support are critical to our ongoing efforts to create a program that values student empowerment and diversity.

I am happy to report that our Health and Physical Education program from the Department of Health and Sport Sciences successfully represented Adelphi at the 85th Annual New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYSAHPERD) Nov 15th to 18th at the Turning Stone Convention Center, Verona, New York. The purpose of the organization is to provide inspiration, professional development, and leadership opportunities for health and physical educators, higher education professionals, and future professionals.The conference theme was “Help them walk, teach them to run, and dare them to fly”.

Thomas Howard (Adjunct Professor) was awarded the organization’s highest honor, which was the Lifetime Service Award. And he presented along with Dr. Mara Manson (Emeritus Professor) the Ron Feingold Feingold Lecture. Last, he presented awards to recipients at the Amazing People Award Presentation.

Bryan Seltenreich (graduate student) was awarded the Graduate Recognition Award and Melissa Duffy (undergraduate student) was awarded the Departmental Major of the year for Adelphi University.

Dr. Christopher Mellor (Assistant Professor) and Physical Education Students (Connor Dekenipp, Tyler Hue, Will Vigil, Annie Zielnski) presented a successful session titled “Integrating Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education in Elementary Physical Education”.

Dr. Wonseok Chey (Assistant Professor) and other colleagues from other universities presented “Learning Culturally Responsive Activities Through Korean Traditional Games”.

Dr. Kevin Mercier with other colleagues from other universities presented 2 presentations: “The State of Physical Education and Physical Activity in New York: Analysis of the NY-PEPAP Data and Directions for Future Action” and “Getting in the Policy Game: Implementation Data to Advocate in New York”.

Dr. Juntack Oh (Assistant Professor), Dr. Wonseok Chey (Assistant Professor) and another colleague presented a research poster titled “Inclusive Physical Activity Mentorship for Individuals with Disabilities”.

Katie Mattot (Graduate Student), Dr. Wonseok Chey (Assistant Professor), and Dr. Kevin Mercier (Professor) presented a research poster titled “The Effectiveness of Content Knowledge Instruction in Tennis and Badminton in Physical Education Teacher Education.

Dr. Paul Rukavina (Professor) and Patricia Gremillion-Burdge (Senior Adjunct Professor) presented “Creating Active Schools that Promote Students’ Overall Wellbeing and Development”

Dr. Paul Rukavina and graduate students Bryan Seltenreich and Kattie Matott (and other colleagues from other universities) presented “Making the Most out of Student Teaching: Tips and Tricks”

The Conference provided our own current students and student teachers enriching opportunities to network with HPE educators in the area and our alumni! Our PE faculty, Dr. Wonseok Chey, Dr. Kevin Mercier, Dr. Juntack Oh, Dr. Christopher Mellor, Dr. Paul Rukavina, Tom Howard, Dr. Mara Manson, Dr. Ellen Kowalski, and Patricia Gremillion-Burdge were all in attendance to support colleagues and reconnect with former students.

Indeed we are proud of our Health and Physical Education programs that continue to lead the field. Congratulations again!

Dr. Manson studied physical education and health education at SUNY Brockport and Hofstra University respectively. She earned her Doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University.
