⚾️ TEAM PRACTICE BUILDS TEAMS. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT BUILDS PLAYERS.
One thing I believe we need to talk about more in youth baseball is individual player development.
Galveston has a growing number of select teams and great opportunities for kids to play baseball. That’s a great thing for our island. But simply adding more team practices and more games doesn’t automatically mean we’re developing better baseball players.
Team practice is important. Kids need to learn defensive situations, communication, signs, cutoffs, relays, baserunning, and how to compete together.
But there are only so many repetitions available when 10–12 players are sharing a field for 90 minutes.
That’s why individual development has to be part of the equation.
Player development is where athletes get the repetitions necessary to actually improve:
⚾️ Hundreds of quality swings instead of 10–15 during batting practice
⚾️ Focused throwing mechanics and arm care
⚾️ Position-specific defensive work
⚾️ Pitching and catching development
⚾️ Footwork, speed, agility, and athleticism
⚾️ Approach, timing, and pitch recognition
⚾️ Identifying weaknesses and intentionally attacking them
A player can attend team practice multiple times a week and still not get enough focused repetitions to significantly improve an individual skill.
And this becomes even more important as players get older.
At younger ages, athleticism can hide weaknesses. As the field gets bigger, pitching gets better, and competition gets stronger, fundamentals and skill development start separating players.
The goal shouldn’t simply be to build the best 9U, 10U or 11U team possible.
The goal should be to help each kid become the best baseball player they can become at 13, 15, 18 and beyond.
That requires both.
TEAM DEVELOPMENT + INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT.
Games show us where a player is.
Development determines where they can go. ⚾️
GALVESTON SELECT PLAYERS — THIS IS FOR YOU.
This fall, Galveston Athletics is opening our Fall Training Program to players from EVERY select organization on the island.
This isn’t about recruiting players away from teams. We want you to keep playing for your team. Our goal is to supplement what your coaches are already doing by providing additional focused training and repetitions that can be difficult to fit into a team practice.
Come train. Get your reps. Work on your weaknesses. Sharpen your strengths. Then take that development back to your team.
Different jerseys. Same island. Better baseball. 🌴⚾️
Registration for Fall Training is open now at GalvestonAthletics.com.
