At Texas A&M University at Galveston Vessel Operations, our mission goes beyond operating vessels. We’re passionate about creating opportunities for students to learn, explore, and gain hands-on experience on the water.

From undergraduate courses and laboratory experiences to specialized training, we work alongside the TAMUG academic community to help turn classroom learning into real-world experiences.

The first day of school marks the start of another semester of learning, discovery, and opportunity at Texas A&M University at Galveston.

For Vessel Operations, that means getting ready to help turn the semester’s lessons into hands-on experiences on the water. From research cruises and fieldwork to supporting faculty and student programs, our mission is simple: help get Aggies on the water and ready to learn beyond the classroom.

Getting Ready to Get Campus Back on the Water!

A new school year is just around the corner, and Texas A&M University Galveston Vessel Operations is getting ready for another busy season on the water.

As new faculty join the TAMUG community and returning faculty prepare for the semester, we’re looking forward to showcasing how Vessel Operations can help turn research ideas into real-world work on the water. From supporting research projects and field work to providing vessels for educational harbor tours, experienced crews, and operational expertise, our goal is to help get our campus out of the classroom and onto the water.

We’ll also be at the Faculty Forum on August 21, ready to connect with faculty, introduce our services, and talk about the opportunities available through Vessel Operations.

Here’s to a new academic year, new research, new partnerships, and plenty of time on the water! 🌊⚓

Vessel Operations Is Moving! 🏗️⚓

Sometimes the work of Vessel Operations happens offshore. Sometimes it happens on the dock. And sometimes… it happens with a moving truck. 📦🚛

We’re excited to be heading back to our original home, Building 3003, on the Texas A&M University at Galveston campus — now new and improved, with a space better suited to support the work we do every day.

While the vessels, research cruises, training, and operations often get the spotlight, there’s another side of Vessel Operations that doesn’t always get talked about: the shore-side operation.

Scheduling trips, coordinating crews, maintaining equipment, planning logistics, supporting researchers, keeping records, preparing vessels, and making sure everything is ready to go long before a vessel leaves the dock are all essential parts of what we do.

Our new space will give that side of the operation a home that better supports our team, our vessels, and the people who rely on us.

It’s more than a move — it’s another step forward for Texas A&M at Galveston Vessel Operations.

Back to where we started.
New space. New chapter. Same mission.

Change is on the horizon for Texas A&M University at Galveston Vessel Operations!

As summer begins to wind down and we prepare to welcome students back for another exciting school year, our team is busy making changes, preparing for the months ahead, and getting ready for a new chapter.

We’re excited to share that Vessel Operations will soon be moving back into our old office spaces! While we’re looking forward to returning to a familiar home, there may be a few surprises waiting along the way… 👀

Stay tuned as we prepare for another busy year of supporting hands-on learning, research, training, and operations on the water. We can’t wait to show you what’s ahead!

As the final week of Sea Camp - Texas A&M University Galveston Campus is underway, Texas A&M University at Galveston Vessel Operations is reflecting on another incredible summer on the water. 🌊⚓

Over the past several weeks, our crews have had the privilege of supporting hands-on learning experiences, introducing campers to the marine environment, vessel operations, and the unique opportunities that exist on the Texas Gulf Coast. Watching the next generation of scientists, mariners, and ocean stewards discover a passion for the water has made this season especially rewarding!

As Sea Camp comes to a close, our focus begins shifting toward the start of the fall semester. Our team is preparing vessels, completing maintenance, and ensuring everything is ready to support another year of research, education, and student success.

Thank you to all of the campers, instructors, counselors, and staff who made this summer a success. We wish our Sea Camp participants the very best as they head back to school, and we look forward to welcoming Texas A&M University at Galveston students back aboard very soon.

🌧️⚓ Preparing Today for Tomorrow’s Weather ⚓🌧️

With the possibility of changing weather conditions moving into the area, Texas A&M University at Galveston Vessel Operations is taking proactive steps to ensure the marina and fleet are prepared for whatever conditions may develop.

Weather preparation is a continuous part of maritime operations. Our team is reviewing forecasts, securing vessels and equipment, inspecting dock areas, and implementing preventative measures designed to help mitigate the impacts of rain, wind, high tides, and other challenging conditions.

From routine weather checks to securing assets and preparing operational spaces, every step is focused on protecting our fleet, supporting safe operations, and ensuring we are ready to respond before, during, and after all changing weather events.

Preparedness is built through planning, teamwork, and attention to detail. A big thank you to the Vessel Operations team for their continued dedication to keeping our marina safe, secure, and ready to support research, education, and maritime operations—no matter what the weather brings. 🌊

After a short break for the Fourth of July, is back in full swing! ☀️🌊

The marina is busy once again as Texas A&M Galveston Vessel Operations helps make this a summer to remember for the next generation of marine scientists and ocean explorers. From getting campers safely out on the water to supporting hands-on learning experiences, our crew is proud to be part of every adventure.

There's nothing quite like seeing curiosity come to life on the water. Here's to another exciting week of discovery, exploration, and unforgettable memories!

One of the many behind-the-scenes responsibilities of the Texas A&M University at Galveston Vessel Operations team is helping ensure the Sea Life Facility has the high-quality seawater it needs to support its animals, teaching, and research. When needed, our crew retrieves seawater from NOAA Fisheries Service here in Galveston to help keep the facility prepared and operating smoothly.

While it's not always the most visible part of what we do, this collaboration plays an important role in supporting hands-on education, marine research, and the daily care of aquatic life at TAMUG.

From supporting researchers on the water to helping sustain the facilities that make marine science possible, Vessel Operations is proud to serve the Texas A&M Galveston community.

Thank you to the Texas A&M Arts & Sciences team for the original post highlighting the importance of hands-on learning. Through Oceanographic Field & Laboratory Methods, students have the opportunity to move beyond the classroom and into the field, conducting offshore operations near Galveston, collecting water samples, participating in research cruise activities, and developing the practical skills needed for careers in ocean science.

We're proud that Texas A&M University Galveston Campus and our Vessel Operations team can help support these experiences and provide students with access to the vessels, equipment, and expertise that make this type of experiential learning possible.

As World Ocean Month comes to a close, we're reminded that investing in student training today helps advance ocean research and stewardship for years to come.
