Black Hawk College Veterinary Technology Program

Our students had the amazing opportunity to visit Brandon Hall, Black Hawk College Alumni, and take part in an outstanding cattle lab!

This hands-on experience gave our students the chance to complete physical exams, administer vaccines, place ear tags, draw blood from the jugular vein and coccygeal vein, administer antiparasitic medications and assist with pregnancy checking and castrations. This helped the students to complete many CVTEA skills while gaining valuable real-world experience working with cattle. Experiences like this are such an important part of preparing our students for successful careers in veterinary technology.

We are so grateful to Brandon for welcoming our students, sharing his knowledge and expertise, and helping provide such a memorable learning experience!

It’s always special to see our Black Hawk College alumni giving back and helping the next generation of veterinary technicians learn and grow. 💙

So incredibly proud of our second year students. They all completed their internship. 320 hours total over 8 weeks. Now onto graduation 🎓and pinning ceremonies tomorrow. Cannot wait to celebrate them.

We're so grateful to work with our community partners to expand our student's experiences! Our first-year veterinary technology students had the opportunity to work with Stevens Veterinary Clinic and the Black Hawk College Equestrian Program this week to learn about physical examinations, vaccinations, and blood draws in horses.

Had a great time bringing a group of first- and second-year students to the MVVMA continuing education meeting this week. This smaller local meeting is such a great introduction to what organized veterinary medicine looks like in practice.

It’s one thing to learn in the classroom, but seeing veterinarians and technicians come together to share knowledge, discuss cases, and support each other really shows the collaborative side of our profession. The MVVMA meeting is always a welcoming environment and a perfect place for students early in their training to start building connections and understanding the broader professional community.

Proud of these students for taking the time to engage outside the classroom and excited to see them grow into the future of veterinary medicine.

This special event was all about supporting Henry County Humane Society- Kewanee, IL, while celebrating the amazing students from our Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (SCNAVTA). Their compassion, professionalism, and dedication truly shined as they helped teach kids about veterinary care—one teddy bear at a time.

Thank you to our incredible students for your hard work and big hearts, and to everyone who came out to support the shelter and this meaningful cause. Community, education, and kindness all wrapped into one unforgettable day!

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the success of our second-year students as they complete their third semester of school. This term was filled with many strong hours of learning through engaging lectures and hands-on labs that challenged and strengthened their skills. Along the way, there were moments of real stress, including the added hurdle of having no internet in our building for the final two weeks, our students showed resilience, adaptability, and determination. Their hard work truly paid off, and it is exciting to see so many required skills successfully signed off. Congratulations to each of you on this well-earned achievement and on the progress you continue to make toward your professional goals.
