The UNM-Gallup campus will be closed temporarily from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, for 2026 Fall Convocation. The campus will reopen at 11 a.m.

With the start of the 2026 fall semester coming soon, UNM-Gallup, Zollinger Library plans to host several fun events and activities to welcome students back to campus.

During the month of August, the library will celebrate National Cookie Day and National Kool-Aid Day in addition to hosting a scavenger hunt, an afternoon movie, and a TV karaoke challenge.

UNM-Gallup bids farewell to Community Education & Workforce Development Director Ashlee Velasquez, who's last day in office was Thursday, July 23. Her official end date is July 31. Velasquez is moving on to become the director of community engagement and relations for Gallup-McKinley County Schools.

Velasquez is a graduate of UNM and started working at the Gallup branch campus in April 2024. She was instrumental in re-building and strengthening the Community Education & Workforce Development program, which now has six in-person courses and 17 online courses for professional training.

“Every ending is the beginning of a new adventure," Velasquez said. "I'm grateful to have been part of the best work environment I could have asked for, filled with amazing people, support, and appreciation.

"The best thing about working at UNM was the people," she continued. "Everyone who I encountered, helped and worked with was always so welcoming and warming. This made the best and most positive experience throughout my whole professional career."

UNM-Gallup recognizes Velasquez for her tenacity, organization skills, community engagement, collaborative spirit, and leadership. We thank her for two years of service and dedication to UNM-Gallup. 🐺❤️

UNM-Gallup students Lorenzo Manygoats and Tyrone Castillo performed outreach on behalf of Gallup Community Health, handing out bags of food and hygiene products to unhoused members of the community Tuesday, July 21.

Manygoats and Castillo are finishing an internship with Gallup Community Health this summer as part of a field experience course for the human services-substance abuse associate degree program at UNM-Gallup. Both students are interested in working as substance abuse counselors.

The pair also posted flyers at local businesses to spread awareness about a healthcare needs assessment that they helped develop.
