Congratulations to Dr. Deborah Gussman, Professor of American Literature, and her team on the digital project, The Catharine Maria Sedgwick Online Letter (CMSOL), for receiving another grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities!

Dr. Gussman is one of the project’s three primary editors (along with Principal Investigator Patricia Kalayjian, California State University-Dominguez Hills, and Lucinda Damon Bach, Salem State University).

NEW FALL 2025 course: The EDITING PRIMARY SOURCES INTERNSHIP is open to any student with an interest in reading, editing, and publishing historical documents. There are no prerequisites, but students should be familiar with cursive writing, as you will be transcribing handwritten letters.

(FT) Assistant Professor, English Faculty members are primarily teachers and are responsible for the preparation and implementation of assigned courses. The college expects faculty members to spend about threequarters of their time in teaching responsibilities.

TWO WEEKS: The 15th Annual Paul Lyons Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 3, at 2:30 PM in the Lower Level Art Gallery will feature Dr. Elizabeth Ellis, Associate Professor of History at Princeton University.

Elizabeth Ellis specializes in early American and Native American history as well as Indigenous Studies. Her research focuses on diplomacy, borderlands, cross-cultural exchange, and Indigenous politics in early North America. She earned her B.A. from Tulane University and her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her first book, The Great Power of Small Nations: Indigenous Diplomacy in the Gulf South, explores the formation of Native American nations in the Lower Mississippi Valley and their role in shaping the region’s history.

Additionally, Dr. Ellis will be part of the Second Annual Arts and Culture Summit at Stockton Atlantic City on April 4th. We hope to see you at both of these spectacular events!

133-Year-Old Note Found In Rafters Of Historic Cape May Church The note was handwritten on what is now Juneteenth by Rev. Dr. Alexander Herritage Newton, a religious leader who served in the Civil War.

Dr. Reid-Merritt – author, educator, scholar, community activist and performing artist - recently retired as a Distinguished Professor of Africana Studies and Social Work. Dr. Reid-Merritt served as Coordinator of the Africana Studies Program (2003 - 2016), spearheaded the University’s annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposiums ((2004 - 2015), and chaired the National Fannie Lou Hamer Statue Committee (2012).

Dr. Reid-Merritt is also the Founder and Artistic/Executive Director of Afro-One Dance, Drama and Drum Theatre, Inc., a community-based cultural and performing arts organization currently celebrating its 46th year of operation. Additionally, Dr. Reid-Merritt is the author of numerous publications and the recipient of many awards.

Thank you for all you have done for the School of Arts and Humanities and the Stockton community, Dr. Reid-Merritt! You are already missed!
